Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
October 7, 2016
I can't believe it is already October and that we have been in school for 30 days! The boys and girls are working hard. I am very proud of them!
This week in phonics, we practiced reading and writing words with the short vowel e sound, spelled e and ea as in egg and head. Students also identified nouns and practiced using nouns in a sentence. In addition, we talked about adding the -ed ending to word to show the action as happened in the past. We listened to the ending sound and noticed that the sound can make the /d/ sound or a /t/ sound and may even add an extra syllable to the word (yelled, missed, headed).
In reading, students listened to the story "The 3 Little Dassies" by Jan Brett. Students used the 5 finger retell to identify and describe the characters, setting and main events in the story. The students did a great job comparing this story to our read aloud last week, "The Three Little Pigs".
In math, we continued to work on finding different number combinations for a given number. This could be a difficult skill and will be reinforced daily through calendar math. Extra practice at home would be beneficial as well. Students can use pennies or cheerios as counters if needed. Students also played the game, How Many Am I Hiding? This game introduces the students to the idea of a missing part. I watched students to see if they just guessed, used the connecting cubes or were they able to use their knowledge of number combinations to find the missing part.

Scholastic Book Order
October Book Club order is due on 10/14. All orders are online. L969F
Math Pages
We will be taking our Unit 1 math assessment on Tuesday. I have sent home completed work and worksheets that we did not complete. These are to be kept at home. With so many hands on math lessons, we do not complete many worksheets. Use them as you'd like. I also sent home a copy of the primary number cards needed to play Compare and Double Compare. Your child will also need 8-12 pennies to play Heads/Tails and dice/number cubes to play 5 in a Row.
Fall Party
The Halloween parade and Fall party will be on Friday, October 28th at approximately 9:45. Our party will begin immediately following the parade. You will receive an email from our room moms on the Shutterfly site if you would like to sign up to donate an item. All parents are welcome to attend.
Donations
I can always use prizes for our class prize box. I would appreciate any and all donations. Thank you!
