School Resource Officer Appreciation Day - February 15
Thank You Officer Puffenbarger!
Governor Glenn Youngkin issued a proclamation declaring February 15, 2024 to be School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
School Resource Officer Appreciation Day not only honors those who serve our school communities as certified law enforcement officers but also commemorates their contribution as role models and law-related educators.
The Department of Criminal Justice Services Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety is the state’s resource and training center responsible for cultivating K–12 school safety, including supporting and certifying SROs. We are proud to say Virginia has one of the most robust and long-standing SRO programs in the nation with some of the best trained, and most dedicated, law enforcement officers anywhere in the country.
The findings of the 2023 Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions underscore the profound positive impact our School Resource Officers have in our schools. With 89.2% of students in grades 6-8 affirming the constructive contribution of SROs, their significance in fostering a conducive learning environment cannot be overstated.
According to data collected in the 2023 School Safety Audit, Virginia schools currently report there are 869 full-time SROs protecting our schools, including 269 at the elementary level, 246 at the middle school level, 297 at the high school level, and 84 working in other school settings. It is imperative to note that these numbers do not include the multitude of part-time SROs who also serve schools in the Commonwealth.

Hello, and Happy New Year!
I wanted to share that again this year, The GIANT Company is partnering with Rockingham County Public Schools to support students facing food insecurity. From January 1 through March 31, everyone who shops at Martin's in Harrisonburg will be invited to "round up" at the register and donate the round-up amount of their bill to support Feeding School Kids. The GIANT Company will directly support customers' generosity by matching all donations up to $100,000.
Last year, RCPS Food & Nutrition Services received a generous $6,985.67 to reduce outstanding student meal debt and received numerous non-perishable food donations donated by Martin's customers that were distributed to families in need around the district.
Thank you for your support!
