Black History Month

What is a HBCU?

The Higher Education Act of 1965 defines an HBCU as: "any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans

Which HBCUs are in Ohio?

Central State University - in Wilberforce, Ohio, is one of the nation's oldest historically black universities, with a 120-year legacy of academic and athletic achievements. The University actively promotes diversity in its student body, faculty and staff, even as the institution adheres to its core historical responsibility to educate young African American men and women.

Wilberforce University - in Wilberforce, Ohio and founded prior to the end of slavery in 1856. It is the nation's oldest, private African-American university and named to honor the great 18th century abolitionist, William Wilberforce. Wilberforce University is also the "parent" university of Central State University.

The Colerain "3Bs"

The first "3B" is "Be Respectful". This applies to all staff, teachers, students, and families.

Here are 7 simple ways to practice being respectful:

1. Listen and be present

2. Be thoughtful of others’ feelings

3. Acknowledge others and say thank you

4. Address mistakes with kindness

5. Make decisions based on what’s right, not who you like

6. Respect physical boundaries

7. Live and let live

Ask you student what "Be Respectful" means to them and how they practice this at school.

Power of One & Portrait of a Graduate

  • The "Power of One" is the District's Strategic 5-year plan. It will support the District's Mission, Vision, and the NEW Portrait of a Graduate. One of its 5 priorities is "Authentic Engagement". We must ensure all families feel welcomed to dinner.

  • The "Portrait of a Graduate" is the District’s “north star” that ensures we prepare students for success, now and in the future. The Portrait is a collective vision that articulates our community’s aspirations for every student in Columbus City Schools.
