Chugiak Chatter

October 28, 2021

Dear Families,

We greatly enjoyed seeing you at school last week for conferences and the PTO Carnival. Thank you for making time to come visit about your children’s progress to date and goals for the second quarter. Thanks, too, to all who made the 2021 Fall Carnival possible through their generous donations of time, candy and auction items, and creativity. You are all sincerely appreciated!

Rams’ Rave Kicks Off!

Have you heard about Ram Rave Recognition? Chugiak’s positive schoolwide behavior recognition program, the Rams’ Rave, launched this week and it’s off to a great start! You will find a quick video overview here. Recognition is earned by students who know and are demonstrating in word and deed our school guidelines for success and school rules. Up to eight Ram Rave certificates will be awarded daily, and students will not know which staff persons have a certificate in their possession to assign to a worthy recipient.

Parent notification comes in the form of the Ram Rave certificate brought home and is often paired with a phone call which allows your student to share with you what action on their part earned recognition. We love making these celebratory calls! Upon earning a Ram Rave certificate, students will draw a number for our bingo board and once a row, column, or diagonal is complete, the Mystery Motivator will be unveiled and the group in the winning row will share in that final celebration! The board will be cleared, and we’ll begin again!

Thanks to our Chugiak families for supporting your students in learning and applying habits that are honest, helpful, safe, friendly, and fair and for emphasizing the importance of following school rules so that everyone is safe and ready to learn. Your work at home results in a more positive learning environment for all of Chugiak’s kids!

Drop Off/Pick Up Procedure

A couple of recent inquiries about after school pickup procedures indicate that a quick review will be helpful. Here are the highlights:

  • Chugiak’s drive lane is one-way, with entry from the Old Glenn Hwy to two lanes, left/right, traffic moves at 5 MPH.

  • When rounding the curve, the two lanes split to three and curbside drop/pickup begins at the sign. Cones indicate where lanes split into three and where they regroup into two at the end of the curbside drop/pickup zone, at the third crosswalk.

  • Right lane: active unloading/loading only at the curb. No sitting or exiting vehicles. Please pull as far forward as possible to load students. Students exit curbside only; no exit on the driver side.

  • Middle lane: active drive lane at 5 MPH. From here, if curbside is open, drivers might ease to the right to drop or load students or drivers might ease to the left to turn into our parking area and park or proceed through the drive lane to exit our lot. No loading or unloading from the middle lane.

  • Left lane: active drive lane at 5 MPH. Drivers may turn left to park or continue through the lot to exit.

  • Drivers must be alert at all times for persons in the crosswalks.

We welcome community input into what is working or needing adjustment, so please let us know what suggestions you have for improvement. Thank you all for working together to ensure all students are safe at the end of our school days.

As always, we thank each of you for your support for our school community. You are the reason why “we’re having a great day at Chugiak Elementary!”

No Cell Phones in School Zones

An ordinance (law) passed by the Anchorage Assembly on June 20, 2019 makes it unlawful for a driver of any vehicle to talk on a mobile communication device while driving a vehicle within an active school zone or on school grounds, unless the vehicle is stopped or a hands-free device is used. Read the factsheet below for more information.
