Palms Elementary News
Every student receives a book in Mrs. Lowhorn's class from donations every month for the Scholastic book club. They are so excited every month to choose their own books to keep.
Palms Elementary Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Mandy Mychek is a hometown girl. She attended Pine River Elementary, St. Clair Middle School, and graduated from St. Clair High School. She attended Saginaw Valley State University where she met her husband, Andy. They have been married for 20 years this year.
Mrs. Mychek started teaching in Saginaw Township before being hired in East China School District. She started at Marine City Middle School in 1999 teaching 6th grade math and loved the school, the community, and kids even though it was her rival school. (Lol!) She then transferred to Palms Elementary teaching 4th grade and has been in that position for eight years. She loves the supportive Palms community, kids, & staff. She says that they make working at Palms an inviting, pleasant place to be, not just "a job".
She says, "I have never questioned that teaching has always been my passion. I remember playing school all the time with my mom and my dolls at the kitchen table when I was little. Things just progressed from there. I know many amazing past teachers from East China that also contributed to my desire to go into this profession." She loves making connections with kids and it is her top goal. She also says, "That when kids know that you truly care about them as a person and are interested in who they are and what they need, they are more likely to thrive in their learning and give you their best."
She and her husband live in Ray Township. They have two boys’, Ty, a junior and Louis, an 8th grader. Both attend Romeo Schools. They are a big sports family, so much of our time is spent watching and encouraging the boys in their travel and school sports. Every once in a while she runs into former students and families at the fields who are competing against her boy's teams. She also enjoys being outdoors, sunshine, and warmth. Her hobbies are gardening, reading, drawing, exercising, and vacationing.
Mrs. Mychek's favorite quote is, "Do small things with great love."
MC Choir Students Visit U of M
MC Choir students got a chance to visit the University of Michigan for Vocal Arts Day on Saturday, January 11. Our students rehearsed and performed along with university students and we also enjoyed performances by the Men's and Women's Glee Clubs in historic Hill Auditorium. It was a great day!
