The Gower Gazette
Week 22- February 22, 2019
In The Classroom...
This week we connected Reading, Writing, & Social Studies in our lesson which focused on Presidents' Day. The kids learned so much about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They "wowed" me with the facts they remembered about each one. I wanted them to understand our election process in the United States so we held our very own class election for Class Bucket Filler. The kids nominated their peers that they thought were deserving and then formed campaign teams to help promote their candidate. In the teams they made posters, persuasive speeches, and wrote positive character traits about each person running. Our candidates were: Aaron, Lilly, David, and Molly. We made a Breaking News Cast on Tuesday to announce these awesome candidates. The kids loved doing this and having a job in producing this video. On Thursday we held a debate where each candidate had to answer 4 questions... boy, did they do a great job! I was very impressed with all four students and their responses. You can watch our class debate below. Our election was on Friday. The kids were sure to have their ID with them so that they could vote. In the end, Molly was voted our Class Bucket Filler. Congratulation to her! We made lots of videos this week, be sure to watch them all.
In Math, we began looking at what the equal sign means (same value as). We've been busy balancing equations and seeing if they are equal or not equal. We will work on this skill more next week.
In Science, we began our unit on Rocks. We will explore volcanic rocks next week (how exciting)!!!
As you can see it's been a very busy week. We have a lot coming up so don't skip the "Notes" section. You'll need to read it to be up to date!
I hope you all stay dry this weekend. It sure has been a rainy week!
Take Care,

Notes~
- Interim Reports- Interim reports are in your child's Friday Folder. Please look over it and let me know if you have any questions. These need to be signed and returned on Monday.
- Sick- We have had several kids out sick. There is definitely something going around. Please remember that Wake County policy is kids MUST stay home until they have been fever free for 24 hours. I know how it is to be a parent and to feel like you need to get to work, but sending your child in when they are sick and on medicine doesn't help keep our classroom germ free and help the other students with staying healthy. Please be mindful and keep your child home if they are not 100%. They'll need the rest anyways. Thanks for understanding.
- Field Trip- Field Trip forms, lunch info, and money were due today (Fri, Feb. 22). We still have this out from a few students. Please turn this in Monday. We have to place lunch orders in advance and pay the museum as well as the buses. Thanks for taking care of this quickly.
- Dr. Seuss Day- We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday next Friday, Mar. 1st. We are asking the kids to come dressed up as a Dr. Seuss book character to help us celebrate. We have some fun activities planned. Students can also bring in any Dr. Seuss books they have at home to share during the week with the class.
- 120 Day- Don't forget about the projects. These are due on Mar. 11th. The kids will share them throughout the week with their peers. We will celebrate 120 day on Mar. 15th!
