Move around the classroom. Movement=Accountability. If a student has no idea you may walk past them while teaching, they are less likely to be off-task.
Send a gentle reminder or an alert before locking the screen. Give students a chance to correct the behavior. These alerts also remind students they aren’t alone online.
Assign those who are prone to being off-task a specific job such as looking up information for the entire class during a group discussion.
Discuss digital citizenship. We should be training students in becoming global digital citizens so they can safely and successfully use technology.
Consider that you don’t know what other teachers are asking or allowing students to do. It is not a best practice to monitor students while they are in another teacher’s classroom. If you do see something that seems concerning, consider calling the classroom teacher before locking the student’s device.
