Shaken Baby Syndrome
Protecting Your Newborn
What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Effects
Brain swelling and damage, Subdural hemorrhage, Mental retardation or developmental delays, Blindness, hearing loss, paralysis, learning difficulties and Death.
Prevent It
Don't shake the baby in reaction to their crying instead try soothing techniques to prevent the baby from crying. For Example: Give the baby a pacifier after checking to make sure that he or she is not hungry or wet. Take the baby for a walk in a stroller or a car ride. Simply hug and cuddle the child gently.
Treatment
Doctors will closely monitor the child. They watch for signs of brain swelling and difficulty breathing, which can lead to the death of brain cells or a stroke. If signs of these problems occur, the child is admitted to an ICU where he or she is treated with oxygen therapy or a ventilator. A neurosurgeon may treat the bleeding and swelling in the brain. Sometimes surgery is necessary.
