Student Leadership Applications
At Madison Elementary, exciting changes are coming! The staff at Madison Elementary wants to expand leadership opportunities for our Bears. During the 2019-2020 school year, Student Leadership opportunities will be available both semesters in order to increase a sense of belonging, school pride, recognize student leaders, and further develop student leadership skills.
Timeline:
August 23, 2019: Student Leadership Applications go home with every Bear!
August 30, 2019: Student Leadership Applications are DUE back to the classroom teachers.
September 9-September 14, 2019: Students will be notified by their Staff Leader.
September 16-September 21, 2019: Orientation for Student Leaders
September 23, 2019: Student Leaders Begin!
Counselor and Social Worker Corner
August 26 we will begin to have our counseling lessons in the classrooms. Grades K-4 will have counselor lessons every other week. PreK will have weekly lessons beginning mid-September. This week, we will spend time introducing our new social worker, visit the social worker and counselor offices, and review what services we offer to students.
We want our students and parents to know that we are here to help ensure this is a great year for EVERY learner, EVERY day, in EVERY way. We are available to help assist our families with needs here at Madison and outside of school. At school, we provide peer mediation, develop student support plans for classroom success, and work with individual students and small groups to provide instruction and social-emotional support. Please reach out to us if you have any questions, want to brainstorm how we can best support your child, or need someone to talk with you about how your child's year is going.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year!

Library Volunteers
Our school Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Schmuhl, is looking for first-grade parents who are interested in coming in once a month during lunch to read a picture book to a small group of kids from your child’s class. You would have freedom to pick the date and have no more than 5 kids in a group. There will be a basket in the library that you could choose books from or you are welcomed to bring in a book of your choice.
Fourth-grade parents are also needed to host a book club group. We are hoping to get at least 1 if not 2 parents per class. These volunteers are asked to come in 2 times a month for the months of October - February during their child’s lunch. They are also asked to read the 4 books Mrs. Schmuhl has chosen from the William Allen White list and lead discussions with their group. Mrs. Schmuhl will provide discussion questions.
Mrs. Schmuhl is also in need of a book shelver. This would involve coming in on Thursdays to shelve books. This works best if you are able to come in at 8:30 to shelve the books before students start showing up for classes.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact Mrs. Schmuhl at schmuhla@usd231.com.

Gardner Edgerton Youth Community Programs
Each year the Gardner Edgerton High School Cheerleaders host a cheer camp for individuals in grades K-6. We are proud to say that GEHS cheerleaders have been hosting this camp and "Building Blazers" for over twenty years!
This program is divided into two parts: a clinic and a game.
On Wednesday, September 18th, we will host the clinic at GEHS from 5:30 pm-8:00 pm. Check-in will be from 5:00 pm-5:30 pm in the Auxiliary Gym at GEHS. The cheerleaders will teach our Little Blazers chants, cheers, and safe stunting.
On Friday, September 20th, the Little Blazers will attend the home football game versus Lawrence High School. They will be cheering on the track with the high school cheerleaders during the first quarter of the game. If the game on Friday, September 20th should be rained out, the make-up game will take place on Friday, October 4th.
The cost is $40 which includes a cheer t-shirt, bow, and poms to be used/worn at the game. One adult will be admitted for free the night of the game.
Early registration deadline to enroll is Friday, September 6th. GEYCP is helping with enrollments and will only be taking online registrations.
