Mission Statement
St. Maria Goretti is a living testament to our Lord's work in His youngest disciples, exemplified by academic excellence, spiritual formation, and compassionate service to others.
St. Maria Goretti Catholic School aims to form what is True, Good, and Beautiful in the souls of our young disciples of Christ.
Principal's Message
Dear St. Maria Goretti Catholic School Families,
Be sure to visit our updated website for all things SMGCS. www.smgschool.org
Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate Mary's birthday with us on Friday. I also appreciate the food donations to make a birthday treat for all of the students and staff.
The 8th grade will take the Classical Learning Test this week on September 12-13, 2023. The week of September 18-22, 2023, students in grades 3rd-7th will take the IOWA and COGAT tests. This week, we will also teach the Protecting God's Children's Lessons to students in PreK-8th grades. Teachers will send home a letter next week for those opting out of these classes. Please be on the lookout for that.
Permission slips for the October 11th Mission Mass (grades 5th, 6th, 8th) and the October 11th trip for the 7th grade for Vikathon will be sent home in the Friday folders on September 14, 2023. We are looking for drivers for the Vikathon field trips only. Please let Mrs. Malloy know if you can help.
Remember there is no school on Friday, September 15, 2023, to allow for the SMGCS teachers and staff to attend professional development. The school office will be closed.
Finally, please help to monitor any extra items that students may be bringing to school—specifically books and graphic novels that are not in line with the Classical Catholic Curriculum. Mrs. Richards has open library times where any student can check out graphic novels and other great works of literature. Extra items include toys, legos, stuffed animals, etc. These items quickly become a distraction in the classroom. Only students in PreK are given permission to have a stuffed animal on campus.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children's spiritual and academic formation.
St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!
Blessings,
Amy Utendorf, M.Ed.

Indoor Pick-up for the 2023-2024 School Year
You all have spoken! We will continue to do indoor pick-up for the 2023-2024 school year. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey.
Whoever picks up the student(s) must have the orange cards. If you forget, you will be sent to the front office to show an ID, and the student(s) will be sent to the front office for pick up.
Parents, please remember this is not the time to conference with your child's teachers. They have planning periods and time before and after school for conferences. Email them to make an appointment, please.
Please work to keep the hallways clear. Refrain from congregating in the hallways.
Home and School Corner
The year's first meeting is Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. Childcare will be provided.
Every family belongs to this important organization. One parent should make plans to attend. Parents earn a spirit hour for attending, and your student(s) will earn an SMGCS spirit wear, jeans, and tennis shoe day on September 22, 2023.
There will be much information about the KK, plant sale, NJHS fundraiser, the 2023-2024 yearbook, and more. This is a good time to build community and support your school.
Another important item of business will be to approve the updated Home and School by-laws. They are attached here for your reference. Home & School Bylaws
I look forward to see you all there.
Happy Birthday, Mother Mary
In celebration of Mother Mary's birthday, NJHS led a rosary Friday morning. Students enjoyed a special treat at lunch: a blueberry shortcake! The angel food cake represents the angels that hold Mary up, the whipped cream for the clouds upon which she was assumed into heaven, and the blueberries for Marion Blue! Many thanks to our amazing parent volunteers.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a catechetical program for children ages 3-12. It is a reflective-based program of religious formation that helps a child to further develop his/her relationship with God in a developmentally appropriate way.
SMGCS is offering the Atrium program to PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade students. In the ancient church, the atrium was a gathering space between the Church Proper and the street. It was the place where the catechumens, those preparing for initiation to the Church, would receive instruction. Therefore, you will hear students refer to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd as The Atrium.
A message from Alex Massengale, SMGCS Atrium Director
This week, we welcomed children into the Atrium for the first time! We discussed how the Atrium is a special place just for children, where they will hear about God and how much He loves them. It is a quiet place for prayer and contemplation. The children learned about how we talk, walk, and prepare our workspaces in the Atrium. We were introduced to the most important place in the Atrium - our Prayer Table! This is a special table that we make beautiful for Jesus. The children may spend time at the Prayer Table any time they feel drawn to do so.
Each week we will introduce more Practical Life Exercises, along with Scriptural and Liturgical themes. I will share more about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd each week, but in the meantime, you may read more at https://www.cgsusa.org/

Terrific Trojans
Imagine a world where you can succeed by being nice. Where we all pay it forward. Where people look out for each other. It all starts with an act of kindness.
A new tradition begins this year at SMGCS. Teachers are awarding Terrific Trojan stickers to students caught being exceptional. The first sticker was awarded to Noah B., who got up from his lunch to help Mrs. Freda carry boxes to the church.
