From the Principal's Desk
I hope this letter finds you well. As we approach the end of the school year, I wanted to remind you that the countdown for the 3-5 GMAS and K-2 iReady assessments is on. These assessments are an important measure of your child's progress throughout the year and the fruits of all the collaboration between our staff, students, and families will show.
This week was a busy one as we partnered with our corporate sponsors to create fully engaged experiences for families and children. Our Common Threads partnership has completed their program for the year. We are grateful for the partnership with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and The Atlanta Dream for their support in providing enriching experiences for our students.
As we move forward, let's stay connected and complete the work of ensuring our children have the best education possible. The countdown is here, and we are excited to see the progress that our students have made over the course of the year. With your continued support, we can achieve great things together.
Thank you for all that you do, and please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
Best regards,
Dr. Maisha N. Otway
Principal

Updates & Reminders
Top Three policies to REVIEW
Vaping is not our thing
Our children have access to many things that are often not seen as harmful such as tobacco and vape pens. Be sure to monitor them as you would all other adult items in the household. They do not belong in school on accident or intentionally. Sometimes parents may borrow a jacket and leave it in the pocket and now a group of friends have the vape pen. be aware of the policy.
Cell Phone
There has been an increase of cell phone access not aligned with FCS Policy. It is imperative that we remain vigilant when it comes to supervision and enforcing the cellphone policy. If a student has a phone visible during the school day we will provide 1 warning. If the behavior continues the phone will be confiscated and turned into the office to be placed in a secured location for parent retrieval. Please review the policy with your child to ensure you are aligned with expectations. If you have any further questions or concerns don’t hesitate to ask.
Gun Safety
One of the lessons Dr. Sutherland, the professional school counselor, taught is gun safety. The scholars learned the difference between a toy gun and a real gun. Every K-5 class received a certificate for completing the gun safety lesson. The scholars learned what to do if they ever saw a gun. Click the link to see. “Stop, Don’t Touch, Run Away, Tell a Grownup”
- Stopping the first step is crucial. Stopping first allows your child the time they need to remember the rest of the safety instructions.
- Not touching a gun makes it is less likely to be fired and endanger your child or others.
- Running away removes the temptation to touch the gun and the danger that another person may negligently cause it to fire.
- Telling a grown-up is the last step. Children should seek a trusted adult (neighbor, relative, or teacher)– if a parent or guardian is unavailable.
Our scholars also learned that a trusted adult is someone who will listen to you, help you, and keep you safe.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please get in touch with Dr. Sutherland, our professional school counselor at College Park Elementary.
