Two Lacrosse Paddles; One Historic Night!
First, the boys withstood a strong second half surge by the Gauchos, pulling away at the end for a 13-8 victory. Then in a true nail biter, the girls held on for an 11-10 victory. Both squads are looking strong as they head toward playoffs. Congrats to Kevin and Sarah, our fine coaches!...See further on in this update for upcoming lacrosse news.
Welcome to Gary Callahan, our new superintendent-to-be!
Starting July 1st, Gary Callahan will take on the responsibility of leading PCS into the future. I had a chance to sit down with him last weekend and talk about Petaluma High, his vision for the district, and his sense of where education is headed. I was impressed by his intelligence, scope of experience, and genuine understanding of the challenges we all face.
He stopped by Petaluma High last Tuesday to introduce himself to staff and visit a few classrooms. He spent about 45 minutes with us before heading off on his journey around all the district schools. I'm confident Superintendent Callahan has a great deal to offer our district in the years to come.

Student Experiment Ready to Soar into Space
From Ms. Judah:
We have exciting updates for our Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP). This program is the one that involved 300 students from multiple science classrooms. You may recall from the fall semester students working through an original experimental design. In December our strongest proposals were presented to a panel of judges and three finalists were selected. From those three, the team of Morgan Giraud and Tara Thomas were chose to represent PHS. These girls have been working hard on refining their experimental design. At this time our scheduled launch for the International Space Station is set for June 19th. This is a later launch than originally planned. As both Tara and Morgan are graduating seniors, we decided it would be best to expand our student team of collaborators in order to ensure the success of this mission. We opened the opportunity to those students who had previously made it to the panel judges and we are pleased to announce the addition of Lulabel Seitz, Shelby Metten, Alana Roberts and Liza Strong as collaborators for Mission 7.
Over the next few weeks, all six girls will work together to build teamwork and get everyone trained up in the experimental design. They will ship off their experiment in May. When the experiment returns from the ISS in the late summer, our younger team members will process the samples and then work collaboratively to write up their findings.
This has been a very exciting and authentic science experience for all involved. We are very proud of all of our students!
Our participation in this program does come with a price tag and while the district has stepped up to support our participation we are still actively seeking major donors to support our efforts. Anyone with experience in significant fundraising we would welcome your expertise and assistance. Please contact the school if you have any leads or would like to be involved in raising the final funds necessary to cover this program.
Thanks as always to you all for your support of our students. We are on the home stretch!
