Chapter 5: Conducting Knowledge Application Lessons
"Element 14: Generating and Defending Claims
The ultimate purpose of engaging students in cognitively complex tasks is to provide opportunities for them to generate new conclusions and provide evidence for their conclusions. The specific strategies [components] for this element appear in the table below. Many of the strategies involve the basic components of a well-structured argument. The teacher presents this overall structure to students in the strategy of presenting the formal student of claims and support. Once students have this omnibus strategy under control, they can generate and defend claims in any context. When the strategies in this element produce the desired effects, teachers will observe the following behaviors in students.- Students can generate claims based on their cognitively complex tasks.
- Students can provide grounds, backing and qualifiers.
- Students can describe why generating and supporting claims helps them learn more deeply and rigorously."
