A Peak into the Past
The Diary of Anne Frank Unit
New Unit: Anne Frank
This week we started a new unit, which is The Diary of Anne Frank. As a class, we are reading the play. We are not acting it out, but we are assigning parts to students to read aloud as we all follow along. The students were introduced to the background information related to diaries, the Holocaust, and Anne's family. We have enjoyed reading the play with the students and we appreciate their enthusiasm when reading!
Participle/Participial Phrase Hunt
Prior to the week of PARCC, students participated in stations to practice identifying and writing participles and participial phrases. One of the stations involved students hunting through texts, such as their own novels, novels we read in class, and our class textbook to find participles and participial phrases within them.
Who Am I Today?
Each day we allow the students to volunteer to read a character's parts of the Anne Frank play. In order to distinguish who is who, we give each student their assigned person's name tag for the time that they read that character's parts. Please ask your child who they were, if they read, and encourage them to volunteer to read!
What Would You Bring?
Students answered the following writer's notebook entry independently, and then we shared and combined our answers as a class.
You and your family have to go into hiding in a very small space for an unknown period of time. You have about fifteen minutes to gather your belongings. What would you bring with you to help you pass time?

Spicing it Up with Stations
We ended our week with stations that the students rotated through. One of the stations involved reviewing the Participle/Participial Phrase Quiz we took on Tuesday with a teacher while another had an opportunity for the students to earn extra credit on this assessment. The third station had an opportunity for students to further practice combining sentences with these participle and participial phrases to expand their sentence variety knowledge. Many students have been interested in learning about Miep, who helped the Frank's hide during the Holocaust, so the students read an article about her at the fourth station.
