Culture of Dignity: Lesson 7
This Week: Facing Race, Ethnicity, and Gender
Building from the last lesson, students will be challenged to think about how gender and racial stereotypes affect them and their peers, while also learning why people react the way they do when hearing about race, ethnicity, and gender.
Put yourself in their place:
This will be a hard topic to discuss.
Examples below are given to aide in empathizing how others may feel:
(These examples are geared towards secondary students, from the Owning Up: Empowering Adolescents to Confront Social Cruelty, Bullying, and Injustice by Rosalind Wiseman. pg. 105)
You are one girl in a room full of boys, and the topic is menstruation. How might she feel?
One boy in a group of girls, the topic is explaining erections. How might he feel?
One minority person does not make them an expert on the subject and may make them feel extremely self-conscious. Inside and outside the classroom, this student may be having similar experiences as well.
Objectives:
* Understanding cultural differences.
*Understanding that it is not inherently racist to genuinely seek understanding of someone else's history or life experiences.
*Make the lesson environment an acceptable, safe place to make a mistake by saying something "wrong" when sincerely seeking to learn.
*To appreciate difficulties and pressures one may feel being the only one to represent a minority group.
*How to use the SEAL strategy to address racism and bigotry.
Refresher: Stop, Explain, Affirm & Acknowledge, Lock (pg. 47)
Takeaways:
*How easy it is to be ignorant of other cultures, and becoming more aware of the effects from this.
*To learn the difference between a curious question and a disrespectful one based on someone's race. (Ex. Where are you from? - curious VS Where are you really from? -fake curious)
*Don't shut down if you are accused of being racist when seeking to truly understand. Ask why your words or actions come across this way, as you really want to know. It can be difficult to find the right words, and the right time, to say them.
*Supporting a friend's right to speak their truth about how they are addressed and what they feel are bigoted comments.
