What Makes You Say That?
Recently, fifth graders have been preparing for their own kind of debate, a literature based one! Students worked on effective communication and collaboration skills as they generated a list of debatable questions in order to compare the roles and traits of main characters across two books. They were required to clearly state their position and gather evidence to support their ideas. Finally, they presented their mini-arguments to the rest of the class. The debates were quite lively!

Teaching Emotional Skills
Every day at LMES, we are teaching Character, both through the examples we set as well as in lessons geared towards empathy, kindness, and acceptance. Kindergarten students listened to the book "I'm Gonna Like Me" by Jamie Lee Curtis. They learned about the importance of liking themselves for their strengths, as well as the areas where they are working on improving. In grade two, students listened to "The Crayon Box That Talked" by Shane DeRolf to explore how diversity within a unit makes the whole a better group. Students also listened to "Jack's Talent" by Maryann Cocca-Leffler and shared what talent makes each of them unique.
