Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter

Volume 27, Issue 27, March 3, 2020

From the PFC President

Did you happen to check out Family Engineering Night last week? If you did, you saw what some of our great Thornhill minds created and showed off. And by the the end of night, you probably saw what was left of many of those creations after a lot of interest and use by the night’s attendees. A splendid time was had by all.

I would like to thank the members of our recruitment team—Mark Lecker, Alexis Lavine-Moore, and the incomparable Bonnie Forbes—for taking time during Family Engineering Night to provide information about the PFC and answer questions from parents. I believe we received a baker’s dozen-worth of names from parents interested in joining the PFC Board during the next school year. We are going to have some open positions on the board, so now is the time to raise your hand if you want to take a more-active role in all that makes Thornhill a unique place. Want to know more? Attend our PFC meeting this Monday, March 9 from 6-7pm.

And hey, our auction is in less than 2 weeks on Saturday, March 14. Information is below about bidding on items, buying tickets, and volunteering.

The Online Auction is OPEN FOR BIDDING!

More than 60 items are available for bidding right now. Bidding closes on Friday, March 6 at 8pm - THAT’S THIS FRIDAY! While you are there, check out some of the items that you’ll get to bid on at the auction itself on March 14.

Also, will you consider sponsoring a teacher to attend for $75? You can do that here - attendance at the auction is not required.

Last Day to Buy Auction Tickets is Saturday, March 7

We are getting down to it - less than 2 weeks to go! The auction is on Saturday, March 14. You’ve waited long enough - now is the time to buy your auction tickets.

We have to provide a final headcount to the venue so unfortunately cannot sell tickets at the door. Please don’t procrastinate - just buy them now before you forget.

Volunteer at the Auction!

We need your help to make the auction run smoothly! Since you are already going, please consider donating an hour of your time to help us out. You can volunteer before the auction to get everything ready, work at one of the laptops for check-in or check-out, be a live auction spotter/runner, sell drink tickets, sell game tickets - so many options.

Class Gallery Photos Available for Purchase!

You can now order a photo of your child(ren)’s class at MugsyClicks! Go to and sign in with the information you used to order your student’s pictures. You’ll then need an Access Code to view the class pictures, which is THORNGRP20. Free shipping ($20 minimum purchase) until Friday, March 13 with promo code MUGGRP! This is your “Class Photo” - same as last year, a gallery of our teacher and kiddo’s favorite class pose all on one sheet.

March Dine Out: Red Boy Pizza

Mark your calendars for March 10-12 -- that's right, THREE DATES. Order from Red Boy Pizza on Leimert on any of those three dates and Red Boy Pizza will donate 15 percent back to Thornhill PFC. Please bring in this flyer--a PDF version is also attached to the calendar entry on Konstella.

Oakland’s MLK Oratorical, Featuring Thornhill Students, on HBO!

Every year, hundreds of children from pre-K through 12th grade take the stage at the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest, a public speaking competition where they perform poetry and speeches inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Last year, HBO filmed the documentary WE ARE THE DREAM: THE KIDS OF THE OAKLAND MLK ORATORICAL FEST, and you can watch it here until March 24. You can also watch the trailer here. Congratulations to the Thornhill students who participated: Magnolia Stoll, Nora Selke, Joslyn Cox, Lani Anderson, Sophia Espinoza, Phoebe Shank, Katey Yeager, Sydney Lee, Emily Harrison, Fern Vyda, and Genevieve Stanwyck!

About the Thornhill Newsletter

The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.

Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Evie Nagy, at by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.

THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VP of Communications Erin Proudfoot, PFC President Rex Crum, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
