A Note from Mrs. Johansen

Dear Sandburg Families,


I'm so excited to welcome our students and staff back to school next week! We've been planning all summer for this moment and it's finally here! This newsletter is PACKED with information needed for the first day of school. Please take a minute to read over this information with your child.


Students will receive their locker assignments and combinations on the first day of school. If students bring cell phones to school, they will be required to keep them locked in their locker during the entire school day. Please remind your child of this expectation so that we can start the school year on the same page.


We've received questions about when athletics and clubs will begin. As of right now, Cross Country is going to start after Labor Day on September 7th. The district will be sending out a google form for student sign-up. The Girl's Basketball and Boy's Soccer seasons are on hold given both sports are considered High Risk Sports. As soon as we are able, we hope to move forward with those seasons. We also plan to start advertising student clubs after Labor Day weekend, as well.


I'm very excited for the 21-22 to begin and so grateful that you are "One of Us".

Walk Your Schedule Day!

Walk Your Schedule Day is Tuesday, August 17th


12:30-1:15 8th grade students

1:30-2:15 7th grade students


In addition to Walk Your Schedule day, the building will be open on Monday, August 16th from 3:15-5:00 for parents and students to come in to walk your child's schedule. The classrooms will be closed during this time, but students are welcome to practice walking their schedule, if that helps ease any anxiety about coming into school for the first day.

Student Entry and Exit Procedures

Building Entry

As per the Executive Order, students must properly wear a face mask as they walk in the doors of the school.


All students will enter the building at 7:35 each day. Those who want to eat breakfast will go to the cafeteria. Everyone else goes directly to their first period classes. Students in the cafeteria will be seated 6 feet apart and asked to eat their breakfast quickly so they can go directly to class. Staff will be available to supervise all students who are in their classes and in the cafeteria.


Bus Riders

Students who ride the bus to school will enter and exit at Door 7 at the back of the school. Students will be in assigned seats on the bus and must properly wear their masks at all times.


Car Riders

Students who are dropped off or picked up at school will enter/exit the building at Door 1 at the front of the school off Martin Avenue.


Walkers

Students who walk to and from school can enter and exit at Door 1 or Door 7.


Sandburg staff will be supervising the student entry/exit procedures to ensure the students are safe and the flow of traffic is continuous and that masks are properly worn. If students do not have a mask, they will be provide with one as they enter the building.

As a student service team at Carl Sandburg, our goal is to make each student feel welcomed and confident in their skills to succeed in junior high school. We provide resources to students and families informally, such as via our website, and formally to students, whether that be seeing students individually, in groups, or in classrooms.

Concurrent Learning Reminders

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to offer concurrent learning to our in-person students if/when they have been directed to quarantine if they are deemed a close contact to a positive individual or to go into isolation due to testing positive for COVID-19.


We will ONLY allow students who have medical documentation or have been directed by the school nurse and approved by the building principal to quarantine or isolate. Students that have been directed to quarantine and approved to participate in concurrent learning for a specified period of time will be given a device and a link to the Google Meet to participate in learning.


Students on vacation, out of the country, or home ill with any other illness will NOT be allowed to participate in concurrent learning. They will be marked absent per BOE policy 7:070 ATTENDANCE AND TRUANCY.


Expectations for students participating in Concurrent Learning

The following expectations have been designed to best support your student’s learning. Please contact the building principal if you have any questions.


  • Students are expected to be present and on time each school day. If a student will not be in attendance you must call the attendance line or school office.

  • Cameras are strongly encouraged to maximize the learning experience. Face-to-face contact keeps students engaged and helps teachers discern whether students understand the lesson. Individual cases may be discussed with your building’s teacher.

  • Instructional materials must be picked up from the school’s office on the designated day. Your principal will contact you regarding the pick-up schedule.

SchoolCafé

SchoolCafe is a new software system that Nutrition Services is using for parents to access their student's meal accounts, make payments online, and apply online for free/reduced. SchoolCafe is taking the place of Mealtime. Here is some information about the program:

SchoolCafé allows parents to pay for school meals and monitor student account balances, transactions, and request low balance notification online.

  • Stay informed about your student's lunch account activity.
  • Be notified on your phone when your student's account is low.
  • Make secure payments with Visa, MasterCard, or Discover Card.
  • Store your credit/debit card for quick and easy repeat use.
  • Schedule deposits to occur in any frequency you choose.

SchoolCafé allows for access from the web or any mobile device.

  • The SchoolCafé website uses the most up-to-date security available. The online payment plan is an enhancement to the district’s existing pre-pay meal program. Cash or checks will still be accepted.
  • The SchoolCafé apps for both iOS and Android are now available for download. They're free to install and they make your favorite features even easier to use. Download the SchoolCafé app today on the AppStore or Google Play.

A note from the Sandburg Health Office

Hello!

With the start of the new school year only a few days away, it is time to make sure your child’s health requirements are up to date.


  • Annual health examinations are required for interscholastic sports participation. Physical exams are required- before trying out- for participation in an interscholastic sport. The exam form, completed and signed by a doctor, must be dated within 13 months prior to the start of practice or tryouts, and on file in the school nurse's office. Physical forms are available in the school office, online, and here: Certificate of Child Health Examination.
  • All students new to District 15 will require a current physical exam with all immunizations up to date (Certificate of Child Health Examination), and students new to the State of Illinois will require an eye examination. This form is available in the school office, online, and here: State of Illinois Eye Examination Report.
  • All students must provide proof of immunizations by October 15, 2021, or the student will be excluded from school. The list of current immunizations can be found on the district website here: IDPH Health Requirements.
  • Students with health conditions such as asthma, epilepsy/seizures, severe allergies, and diabetes require the emergency action plan completed by their physician along with the Medication Administration Forms, signed by the physician and parent, for any medications required at school. Please bring these forms and medications on or before the first day of school. These forms are available in the school office, online, and here
  • Asthma Action Plan
  • Seizure Action Plan
  • Allergy Emergency Action Plan
  • Medication Administration Form
  • Diabetic Medical Management Plans must be brought in along with medication and supplies prior to or on the first day of school in order for the student to attend.


If your child requires any of these health documents and you have not done so already, please make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
