Mendez Reading Mania
On Friday, October 29, the Mendez Strikers kicked off the halloweekend by dressing up as their favorite book characters. Special guests from around SMCISD and the community joined in the fun by reading to each class.
26th Annual Thomas Rivera Book Award Ceremony
The Texas State University College of Education created The Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award in 1995 to honor authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience. It is named in honor of Texas State University distinguished alumnus Dr. Tomás Rivera. In attendance were SMCISD students from Lamar, Crockett, and Hernandez.
5th Annual Special Olympics Letterman Jacket Ceremony
On Friday, October 29, SMCISD celebrated Angela Perez and presented her with her letterman jacket. Ms. Perez has participated in bowling, basketball, and track since middle school. Coaches say she always comes to practice with a smile on her face and is ready to compete with a fierce attitude. Angela Perez is a crucial member of the team because she is one of SMCISD's most consistent Special Olympics athletes. Congratulations Angela, we are so proud of you!
National FFA Band
Three SMCISD FFA students performed on the largest stage in Agriculture, this past week. Congratulations to Colton Engler, 1st chair alto saxophone; Clayton Engler, tuba; and Diego Quintanilla, 1st chair baritone saxophone and soloist. Thank you for representing SMCISD at the 94th National FFA Convention & Expo.

Superintendent's Teacher Council
Superintendent Dr. Cardona hosted the inaugural Superintendent Teacher Council on Thursday, October 28 at Mendez Elementary. The council consists of two teachers from every San Marcos CISD campus to allow for teachers to have a voice in the future of SMCISD.
Distinguished Alumni Class of 2021
The San Marcos Education Foundation is proud to present the Distinguished Alumni for the Class of 2021. The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award event is to recognize and honor former graduates of the San Marcos High School whose achievements, strength of character and citizenship serve as models to inspire and challenge today's youth.
The following recipients are (left to right) Lon Shell, Class of 1992; Ray Hernandez, Class of 1983; Rudy Espinoza, Class of 1986; and William "Bill" Burnett, Class of 1984.
Bonham Spooktacular Storybook Parade
1st Round of Playoffs
Congratulations to the SMHS Varsity Volleyball team for defeating the Hays Hawks 3-0 on Friday, October 29. The Lady Rattlers will face Vandergrift on Tuesday, November 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of playoffs. The game will be played at Vandegrift High School.
Sunday Shoutout - Skylar's Success
Congratulations to Miss Skylar Brown. Her artwork will represent Travis Elementary at the annual TAEA Conference on November 4, in Round Rock, Texas. Only one piece is selected from each campus.
