All About Me Project

Created by Alexis Morgan from Period One

What does my name mean?

My first name, Alexis, is of English origin. It means helper or defender. My last name, Morgan, is of Celtic origin. It means to live by the sea. I was named Alexis because my dad wanted all of his daughters name's to begin with an A. He and my biological mother couldn't decide on a name though. One day, while they were in the elevator at the Hospital, some guy suggested Alexis, and they liked it. So, that's how I got my first name. My middle name, Rose, came from my aunt Rose.

How would I describe myself?

If I had to use only three words in order to describe myself, I would use determined, motivated, and quirky. I use determined simply because I am. When given a challenge, I won't stop until I meet it. Big or small. I know that if I set my mind to something, with the right attitude, I can do it. I use motivated to describe myself because even when I'm not having a good day, or things aren't working out, I remain motivated to come out on top. I know that no matter how hard things may get, I have the ability to see the good in everything whether it be a person or a task. I have goals set for myself, and at the end of each day, I still have the motivation to strive for these goals. Finally, I would also use quirky to describe myself. I'm different. I don't take the traditional route when the opportunity is given. I make my own path. Maybe it's because I'm stubborn, Maybe it's because I'm curious. Either way, it makes me who I am.

What objects do I cherish most?

Let's be honest here. Just about every teen's most precious object is their phone or laptop. Mine happens to be my laptop because it allows me to do both my schoolwork, watch Netflix, and edit my Tumblr theme. My second most cherished item is my blanket. I know, what a kid, right? Judge me. It's one of those tie blankets, and my sister made it for me a few years back as a Christmas present. It's so soft! Finally, my third most cherished object are probably my old Nike shoes. I keep buying the same pair year after year. They're so comfortable, and they don't get torn up easily, which comes in handy being an active person.

My Freshman Year Motto

"Be who you are, and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Suess

This well known quote by Dr. Suess has been and will be my motto for years. People so often forget who they once were and who they wanted to become during the uproar of new things. I know who I am, and I know who I want to be. I have plans. Goals. And if somebody decides they don't like the person I am, and the person I have yet to become, it is their loss. Those who matter will be accepting. And those who aren't accepting do not matter.

Inspiration to Live By

Below is a quote I found and fell in love with long ago. It was written by Victoria Erickson.

"I crave the ones who've seen confusion and known struggle; who have pulled themselves up from the shackles of heartache and strife, disappointment and darkness, exhaustion and drain and have risen with a heart as open and unwaveringly wide as the ocean itself. Give me those people. The brave, the vulnerable, the wise, the ones who care for a world, and how to better it along with themselves. To know their ability in making waves, in shifting patterns with tides and in creating change. Let us become that open ocean. And make it rise." -Victoria Erickson

This quote speaks to me on a personal level. It talks about how people go through things. Big and little. Day changing and life altering. Yet, these people still come out with an innocent heart. A heart that does not judge simply because it was once treated unkindly. To me, this quote puts into beautiful words how a person can go through so much but still want the best and strive for the best for everyone and everything.

A Letter to My Graduating Self...

Dear Self,

Today, you graduate high school. Congratulations. I am so proud of you. Six years ago, you struggled to find a reason to live another day. Today, you will walk across the stage and get your high school diploma.

Did you maintain a 4.0 GPA all throughout high school? Did you take all honors, AP, and dual enrollment? Were you a member of the National Honors Society? Any scholarships? Academic or athletic. Were you an AVID student all four years of high school?

Did you play volleyball, wrestling, weight lift, and compete in track and field all four years? Did you ever decide to add on soccer or softball? Were you on varsity for any of them? What were your records?

I’m sure you know where you’re going to college. You’ve always been a planner. Are you still going into Psychology? I’m sure you are. You’ve always had a gift for helping people. A natural one.

Moving on from school related things. Are you still planning on going on the 2018 trip to France with Mrs. Smith? Or do you still want to go to France with Braylee first. What about New York? Of course you do.

You’ve completed a major chapter in your life, and you are soon to begin a new one. So, don’t lose yourself and who you’ve worked so hard to become. You did not spend countless nights up till the sun began to peak over the horizon just to mess it up. You didn’t cram for hundreds of tests you were so afraid you were going to fail for nothing. You didn’t play sports, maintain good grades, and volunteer each weekend for nothing. I know you. Keep a clear mind, and stay away from the wrong type of crowd.

With that being said, don’t be afraid to make new friends. Remember that saying from Girl Scouts with Mrs. Tammy? She was such a wonderful woman. I miss her and Katie. Anyways, I’m off topic. The saying went, “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and one is gold.” This is your life. Your college career. Make the best of it. Make new friends. Join clubs. Get to know your professors. Be involved. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. And please, please, please always remember this; you don’t have to be perfect. It is okay to make mistakes. It is okay to trip. Just make sure to get back up, brush yourself off, and try again.

You have this wonderful sense of determination. Maybe because you’ve always had people saying you couldn’t do it, or you just weren’t good enough. But let me tell you this, you are more than good enough. With the right mindset and determination, you can do anything you set your heart on. From day one, you’ve known that you wanted to be everything Amber wasn’t. You wanted to graduate. Go to college. Get a job. Have children. You wanted to prove to everybody watching that you wouldn’t become your mother.

Let me tell you. You aren’t her. So don’t ever think that. And don’t you dare let people compare you to her. You are kind. Compassionate. Loving. You don’t give up on people even if they give up on you. Even if they slam the door in your face. Even if they walk out and never look back. Keep that. You have a pure heart. The world has tried so hard to turn it to stone, but you have refused. Don’t let this world make you cruel.

Take pride in what you do. Continue to set goals. Always study, even if you can swear up and down you remember the material. And for god’s sake, do your homework. Don’t procrastinate. Put time, energy, and effort into the things you do. Give nothing less than your best. Take good notes. Make friends with those in your classes. Study together. Compare notes. If you’re stuck, lost, or confused, talk to your classmates and your professors. Don’t be afraid.

With love,

Your younger self.

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage—pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.” -Stephen Covey
