Before School Band

Here is a link to the before school band calendar with a few minor corrections. Due to the size of the band groups, all before school band sessions will be held at the high school. Students who arrive early will wait in the high school band room. Early supervision for Horizon band students starts at 7:15. Band sessions start at 7:45.

During Encore classes, Ms. Cooper will take a short tour of PHS with all of the band students. We’re excited for this upgrade to our band program, and we want to make sure all of our students are ready for the extra time with band instructors.

Writing (Wiesner)

Students are beginning the brainstorming process for the first writing piece, personal narratives. This week they spent time brainstorming first and last experiences, people and places that have small moments connected to them. We will continue our brainstorming next week.

Reading (Wiesner)

This week the students spent a good amount of time on their Unit 1 pre assessments. Next week we will be spending time in class evaluating their assessments. They will be given the unit rubric and time to set goals for what they would like to accomplish during this unit. Students are encouraged to be reading realistic fiction over the next few weeks. Please remind your student to be reading between 20-30 minutes on reading each night at home.

BizTown (Kingsley)

Students are starting to learn how to balance a check register, write checks, and fill out deposit tickets. This takes a lot of repeated practice, and will be a focus for next week as well. They are also learning about all forms of payment (cash, check, debit card, etc.), and pros and cons to each.

Math (Kingsley)

On Monday, students completed a pre-test for Unit 1 in class. The purpose of the pre-test is for me to see where they are at for the fifth grade standards for the unit and how I can support them in their math approaches. We also spent time talking about growth mindset, specifically in a math class setting, and working with perseverance. We finished up the tail end of the week by formally starting our first unit (adding and subtracting fractions).

Bringing Real-world Concepts into the Classroom

On behalf of the teachers and students at Horizon Elementary, we would like to thank Wells Fargo Bank for their donation of sleeves and checkbook registers. As part of our BizTown curriculum, students learn how to complete checks and balance their checkbook. Wells Fargo generously donated over 200 sleeves and checkbook registers to our students. The support of Wells Fargo makes it possible for our students to participate in an authentic life experience in our classrooms.

Thank you for your dedication to help educate our students to become fiscally responsible adults.
