High School STEM

8th graders see the high school STEM Program in action

Yesterday, the 8th-grade students toured the high school STEM rooms and were introduced to the portfolio of STEM courses available to them during their high school career.


The students had an opportunity to experience some of the activities the STEM courses provide and to talk to high school students presently taking STEM courses.

The photos above and below show students using two different robotic arms engineered by the Biomedical Engineering students, practicing micropipetting in Environmental Sustainability's study of a genetically modified food supply, controlling robots designed and built by Aerospace Engineering students, working with the VEX kits used by Principles of Engineering students and seeing the 3D printers and laser cutter in action.
The STEM course portfolio consists of a mixture of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and district designed courses.


PLTW is the nation's leading provider of high-quality STEM-focused curricula designed to help students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy. PLTW courses transform classrooms into collaborative spaces where students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning.


Using the same principles, district staff have designed new STEM courses and redesigned previously offered courses to introduce and emphasize STEM skills.


Along with extracurricular activities such as the Waksman, STEM club and NJ STEM League, the PLTW and district courses ensure that students can specialize in STEM courses throughout high school and are prepared for college specialization and a career in STEM-related fields.


Two sample high school schedules are shown below. It is important to note that there is a lot of flexibility in the sample schedules shown. In addition, although every attempt is made to accommodate student wishes, conflicts do arise and the district cannot ensure that each course is available when needed.

The high school STEM courses are summarized below.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY (PLTW)

Students investigate and design solutions to solve real-world challenges related to clean drinking water, a stable food supply, and renewable energy. Students are introduced to environmental issues and use the engineering design process to research and design potential solutions.

INTRODUCTION​ ​TO​ ​ENGINEERING​ ​DESIGN (PLTW)

Students are introduced to the engineering profession and dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on, open-ended projects and the use of 3D design and modeling software.

​PRINCIPLES​ ​OF​ ​ENGINEERING (PLTW)

Through engaging and challenging real-world problems, the course exposes students to some of the major concepts that they will encounter in postsecondary engineering courses including mechanisms, the strength of materials and structures, automation, and kinematics.

AEROSPACE​ ​ENGINEERING (PLTW)

A rigorous specialization course that ignites students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. Students explore the fundamentals of flight in air and space as they bring the concepts to life by designing and testing components related to flight such as an airfoil, propulsion system, and a rocket while using industry-standard software.

​ ​TECHNOLOGY​ ​&​ ​DESIGN​ ​PROCESS

Students enter the world of technology by exploring the various technological, engineering and design systems in today's industry. Students are involved in hands-on structural design problems such as towers and bridge building, automotive technology including designing and building race cars.

HONORS​ ​BIOMEDICAL​ ​ENGINEERING

An introduction to the multidisciplinary field of biomedical engineering and the application of engineering principles to solving problems in biology, physiology, and medicine. Students will explore a range of topics from public health and biomedical engineering to clinical medicine and physiology.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT​ ​COMPUTER​ ​SCIENCE​ ​PRINCIPLES

Students are introduced to the central ideas of computer science and computational thinking while fostering their creativity and exploring how computing and technology can impact the world. The course focuses on using technology and programming as a means for creative problem solving and real-world applications.

ADVANCED​ ​PLACEMENT​ ​COMPUTER​ ​SCIENCE

This course develops the content and applications of Computer Science and emphasizes problem-solving in numerous disciplines with an emphasis on algorithms and fundamental data structures.

PROGRAMMING​ ​AND​ ​INNOVATION

This course teaches the basic concepts and techniques of computer programming and computational thinking using Python while introducing students to programming applications such as Robotics, Cyber Security, Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence.

ARCHITECTURAL​ ​AND​ ​ENGINEERING​ ​DESIGN

Students investigating a variety of design challenges using the engineering design process and high-end professional workplace software programs. Students learn technical drawing and graphics including, scaled and dimensioned 2D views, cross-sections, and isometric 3D illustrations.
