Specials Curriculum Update
November/December 2016
Art
The students in the Rustin, Penn, and Fox Classes have done a series of collage projects: building a scene or character starting with a piece of a magazine picture, painting a still life and disassembling and reassembling it in the manner of Picasso, and making a collage design from numbers and letters.
The students created paper puppets made of corrugated card board scraps. These puppets were required to have at least one moving body part. The students decorated the cardboard figures, assembled them, and using hammer and nails, made holes and inserted brass brads for the jointed body parts. The stringing of these puppets requires the skills of threading and knot tying.
Middle School
The focus during November and December has been on the creation of marionettes. This project required many phases and challenges. First, students sculpted a head from a material used in doll making and painted and embellished the heads. Next, the students created bodies and moving parts from wood scraps and wooden rods. This part of the process required that the students envision joint movement and the role of the puppeteer in manipulating the figure. At this phase, the students worked with hand tools, screw eyes, and wires, and problem solved to meet their personal goals for this work of art. The next step in this process involves the creation of a character, visually. To achieve this character, the students will paint, sew, papier mache, and create paper patterns for clothing construction. Once the characters are finished, the students will wire them and bring them to life.
