Free Comic Book Day
Saturday, May 4 was Free Comic Book Day! Every year, on the first Saturday in May, Comic Book Stores, authors, artists, publishers, and other retailers celebrate "FREE COMIC BOOK DAY" by offering up some amazing content to their loyal readers and comic book newbies! Even if you didn’t stop by your favorite comic book store this weekend, like Oxford Comics on Piedmont Road, there are probably still some great freebies are available. Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Geronimo Stilton both count as Comic Books - can you believe it? Remember, comic books are the gateway drug for reading!
GALILEO Annual Conference July 11
The GALILEO Annual Conference will take place July 11 at Middle Georgia State University in Macon. This year’s theme is Reimagining Services, and sessions will feature discussions centered on how the digital world is transforming the work of today’s library. The keynote speaker will be Nikhil Deshpande, chief digital officer for the state of Georgia. I learned a lot about GALILEO resources at last year's conference!
This one-day event is an opportunity for all of Georgia's library community to learn more about GALILEO, touch base with content providers, and network with colleagues across the state. Registration is free and will open in May. For updates and to register, visit the conference webpage.
Library Wrap Up
Through hard work, careful budget stewardship, and donations, I’ve managed to build our collection back up to meet Georgia Accrediting Standards of 10+ books per student. Now we have to hang on to the new stuff we’ve got. In addition to our Makerspace worktable (ordered!) we need to add several low (2-shelf) mobile units to allow for changing circulation patterns and flow next school year. Next year’s library programming goals (dreams) include Avoiding Fake News, Digital Resources, several "Comic Book Daze," Book Tastings and “Blind Dates,” genre and author studies, and "Maker" opportunities. Let me know how I can help you!
Library book overdue notices will be distributed to homeroom teachers every Friday in May - please be sure to pass them out to students promptly. Library books borrowed for classroom use should be returned to the media center as soon as possible.
By the numbers: Library activity
April 2019 circulation: 1,118 patrons circulated 1,016 books. How’d you do that? Some of you must be reading and rereading the same books!
Words read (according to Accelerated Reader) 19,535,704, but only 3 students made the Million Word Club: Michael Weldegaber, Lilah Schaefer, and Mychal Haynie.
