January 2019 - Bernal Intermediate

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year! I hope you all spent the holiday season with family and friends that lifted your hearts and spirits. As we begin the New Year, we are reminded that it rains in California! Tell me it ain’t so! With that in mind, please plan accordingly in the morning when bringing your students to school. Leave a bit earlier to allow for the slower and increased traffic. Keep safety first and obey all traffic laws and be considerate of our teachers that are on duty, as well as students that are walking through the cross walks near school.

Our second round of benchmark assessments will be wrapping up this week. As a reminder, due to costs, we will not send benchmark results home to families. However, if you would like to make an individual request for your child’s scores, please send me an email with your request.

As always, take care of yourselves and each other.

Jamal Splane, Principal

Bernal's Run, Hide, Defend Drill 1/15/19

In our continued efforts to maintain safety in our schools, students recently participated in our annual Run, Hide, Defend drill here at Bernal. Students will be provided lessons that involve a protocol for responding during an emergency situation and practice opportunities to build barricades. The instruction that students will receive will focus on three options (Run, Hide, Defend) that students and teachers have in the event of an active shooter emergency. The Run, Hide, Defend protocol is recommended by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Justice, the International Chiefs of Police, the Santa Clara County Police, and others.

Preparing our students for real and present dangers (including fire and earthquake) is part of a fundamental education in the 21st century. Different times, different circumstances, and different dangers require that we prepare students in different ways. It can be difficult to contemplate something bad happening in our schools, but through responsible planning and training, we will be able to respond to a crisis in order to better protect ourselves and those around us. Safety depends on our ability, our determination, and our commitment to make emergency preparedness a top priority.

We encourage you to engage in discussions with your child about school and community safety in an effort to be prepared to act in the event of an emergency. To learn more about the shift from "Code Red" training to "Run Hide Defend" training, Santa Clara County Police chiefs have put together a video describing the purpose and rationale behind the drill.

*Warning: due to the very nature and purpose of the RHD drill, this video contains a stimulation of a weapon being used and is not appropriate for small children to view.
