Success in Sixth Grade
Volume 10, Issue 2
A Note from Mr. Nakano
"Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best." - Henry Van Dyke
"You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can be grateful because thorn bushes have roses." - Unknown
"Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness." - Leo Tolstoy
Wow, what a fast (almost) month! Like I said at Back to School Night, it has been amazing seeing what these students have been creating these past few weeks. To see them form new partnerships, be an advocate for one another, and build self-confidence is a true treasure.
This month, we've been learning new routines and getting accustomed to having a new online reading textbook, StudySync. Like all the other textbooks, it can be accessed at home as well. All the online textbook access information can be found on their Canvas page.
Student / Parent / Teacher Fall Goal-Setting Conferences
If you did not receive an e-mail with a conference time, please let me know.
In 6th grade, the conferences are student led. They will be guiding the process as we look at current data from recent assessment and set goals for their final elementary year, as they head towards middle school.

Friday will be our first "learning target check," aka quiz. The goals of these checks are to show progress and assess mastery of their learning targets. No check is "one and done" - we continually go back and review these checks the following week and throughout the year.
Growth Mindset
Mindset is a simple idea discovered through decades of research on achievement and success—a simple idea that makes all the difference.
In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong.
In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.
We focus on the belief that all brains can learn.

P.E.
Right now, our curricular focus is on communication and personal space.
BIG
We had our first assembly a couple of weeks ago and look forward to future assemblies, as we start to give the duties to the students to demonstrate their ways of living "BIG" in sixth grade.
