Narcotics
An example of narcotics are opioids. An example of opioids is a prescription pain killer called Roxicodone. They hurt the body by producing drowsiness, mental confusion, nausea, constipation, and, depending upon the amount of drug taken, can depress respiration.
Depressants
An example of depressants are alcohol. They increase GABA and thereby inhibits brain activity. They also produce a drowsy effect which can lead to bad choices.
Stimulants
An example of stimulants is ecstasy. Stimulants harm the body by increasing blood pressure and heart rate, constrict blood vessels, increase blood glucose, and open up breathing passages.
Hallucinogens
An example of a hallucinogen is pcp. PCP and other hallucinogen abuse can result in dangerous hallucinations coupled with aggressive behavior.
Inhalants
An example of inhalants is gasoline. Inhalants can harm the body by causing nausea and starve the body of oxygen.
