Mrs. LaValley
Hi, My name is Claire LaValley and I am one of the fourth grade teachers at Jefferson. I have been teaching here for 17 years with most of those years being in third grade. This year I was lucky enough to move up to fourth grade with my third grade class.
I live with my husband, Rich. He is a forester for the DNR.
I also live with my dog Griffin. He is 1 ½ years old and is a Small Munsterlander. Griffin is becoming a good bird hunting dog and keeps my husband busy on the weekends looking for grouse.
I have two children. John is 24 years old and goes to college in Whitewater. My daughter, Sara, is 21 and is going to school in Eau Claire. Both of them are following in their father’s footsteps and are majoring in Biology and Conservation.
During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also love to read, although I don’t get a lot of time to read for pleasure.
I feel very lucky to be teaching in such a great school. The staff and students make Jefferson a fun place to be at each day.

Choir Caroling
Dear Jefferson family,
On Monday, December 10th, our choir students went on a caroling field trip with me around Merrill. We had lots of fun singing holiday songs for all we met, including Merrill firefighters, workers & shoppers at Dave’s County Market and the Holiday gas station, and elderly residents & workers at Stonebridge and Park Place! Please enjoy the attached photos and videos from today’s trip.
Merry Christmas!
Miss Greunke

PBIS
Now that the snowy months are here. We have a few additional expectations to keep the students safe and warm. Students do not go outside if the windchill is below 0 degrees. All students are asked to wear a coat, hat, mittens, and boots. Students in grades K-3 must also wear snow pants. We allow students in grades 4 and 5 to choose if they'd like to wear snow pants. If a student does not have boots, they are required to stay on the blacktop area. Football is played in the field, so boots are required.
Here are the common expectations for all students on the playground:
Be Safe
- Use equipment properly
- Stay in boundaries
- Avoid icy, wet and muddy areas
- Hands & feet to self
Be Responsible
- Line up-Quick & Quiet
- Wear seasonal clothing
- Take care of and return equipment
Be Respectful
- Play by the rules
- Use kind words & positive attitude
- Include others
STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY?
During this festive season of giving, it often becomes difficult to make ends meet. Are you struggling to pay for your child’s meals at school? You may qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced School Meal program. The program is confidential (your child doesn’t even have to know) and easy to apply for. To view some frequently asked questions, visit the Food Service website: http://www.taherfood4life.org/schools/merrill/freereduced-meals/
We have also included the application below for your convenience. Please fill out both pages and return it in a sealed envelope with “MAPS Food Service” written on the front and we will submit it for you. If you would like us to send home a printed copy, please let us know and we would be happy to do so!
Daily Attendance Rate
Tardies continue to hover around 8 per day. Please remember our teaching instruction begins at 7:55AM every day. Thank you.
