Rich Mathematical Tasks
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has released at least one rich mathematical task for each grade level in grades K-5.
These tasks will be added to the units they align to in the next few weeks. The VDOE has stated they will add another task in the upcoming weeks. As they are completed, we will add them to our curriculum. Teachers should look for them on the Virginia Beach Objective (VBO) overview page. The tasks should be implemented to support the work we are doing around problem solving as a school division. Each task is accompanied with an implementation plan, rubric and anchor papers.
Miniature Landscape Project - Virginia Flower and Garden Expo
Students can design and create a miniature landscape to be displayed at the Virginia Flower and Garden Expo on Jan. 24-26, 2020.
This project includes skills in research, writing, science, math, music, art, history and geography. Using the guidelines provided, students will design and build their mini-landscape. This project can be incorporated into the classroom through connections to the Virginia Standards of Learning. Contact Mary Hubbard at mvyhubbard@gmail.com for more information.
Water Quality Testing - Virginia Aquarium Field Experience
Teachers can schedule a behind-the-scenes tour for their students as part of a field trip to the VA Aquarium.
Participants will collect water samples from Owls Creek and conduct field and laboratory tests. They will learn how Water Quality Labs maintain healthy aquariums and work with citizen scientists to track watershed health. Call 385-FISH or email vamscgso@virginiaaquarium.com, for more information.
