Great News!
Avon High School Earns National Recognition
The College Board just announced that AHS is one of ten high schools in Connecticut and one of 447 nationwide to be recognized on the "AP District Honor Roll." This is the first time that Avon has earned this distinction. According to the College Board website,
"The following honor roll consists of the 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada that
simultaneously achieved increases in access to Advanced Placement® courses for a broader number of students and also maintained or improved the rate at which their AP® students earned scores of 3 or higher on an AP Exam."
This recognition is an important one because it recognizes both increased access to Advanced Placement class for all students and the high level of achievement by Avon High School students.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday and restful break.
Best Regards,
Dave Peling Sr.

Capstone Update
Attention all seniors! The January date for Capstone presentations is fast approaching!
For those of you who plan to present:
- Be sure to complete the survey on classroom so you can be scheduled.
- Hand in (hard copies to W119) your product and reflection paper the week we return from break so they can be handed out to grading panels before presentation night.
- Presentations will begin at 6:30 pm on Thursday 1/11/18. Invite friends, family, and expert audience members.
For those who still have work to do:
- If you have not submitted a proposal OR have not made significant progress you may be enrolled in a Capstone Skills course beginning Semester 2. If you are recommended for this course you will be given an opportunity to appeal this decision during exams.
- Be sure to be in contact with your mentor. If they do not see you or hear from you, then they will imagine you are not making progress.

Make-up Exams will be held daily on the above exams days from 12:15pm to 2:15pm
The exam schedule will be posted on the LCD monitors and the AHS Daily Bulletin on the website.
Please take note of the following reminders to ensure a smooth testing session:
- Be sure to check the exam schedule carefully.
- Exams must be taken during their scheduled periods.
- Buses are only at AHS for the regular morning run and the 12:15pm dismissal. There are no buses in between exam sessions. Students must arrange for their own transportation if they plan to leave after the first exam session or arrive only for the second exam block.
- All students must remain in the exam room for the entire length of the examination period.
- Students are strongly encouraged to bring reading or study material should they finish early.
- Lunches will not be served and the café store will be closed. Please feel free to bring a snack.
- Consolidated Bus Routes will be posted outside of the main office and in the gallery.
- In case of a snow day during exams, the exams scheduled for the snow day will be held the following day. If there is a late opening, the first exam for the day will start at 9:40am. The second exam will start at 12:00pm and end at 2:00pm. Students with both exams on a "late opening" day should bring in a snack for lunch. Buses will depart AHS at 2:15pm on a late opening exam day.
- Students who do not have an exam period, but are in school, should report to the cafeteria. The academic areas will be closed during testing.

AHS Internship
Attention Juniors & Seniors: Are you interested in exploring a particular career field or just want to get real world experience, develop practical skills and gain insight into a possible college major? Then it is not too late to add an Internship for the second semester. Please stop by Mrs. Brisco’s office opposite the Gallery to discuss the possibilities.
"I think more students should take advantage of the internship program. It is a great way to figure out what you want to do not to mention it looks great on college applications. You should really stay committed to it and you can learn a lot." - Student Intern

AHS Camerata Singers
The AHS Camerata Singers have been busy spreading holiday cheer throughout the community! The choir performed three 30 minute concerts for the Avon/Canton Rotary Club (12/15), the Avon Senior Center Christmas Party (12/18) and the Avon/Canton VFW December Party (12/21). The choir performed selections from their repertoire and carols for three very appreciative audiences. On December 15th, immediately following the Rotary Club performance, the choir sang two carols on WTIC 1080AM during the 9:00 am hour. Andrew Brochu, the choir director, was interviewed on air by host Will Marotti. Although this is a busy time of year, the student singers are committed to giving back to the community using their time and talent and they enjoyed every moment.
On Wednesday, December 20th, the five choirs of Avon High School performed their winter concert to a standing room only audience. The concert ended with a rousing rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus featuring several returning alumni singing with the choirs. It truly was a night to be remembered!
