Principally Speaking
Jackson Parents/Guardians,
Happy New Year to each of you! Did you know that Jackson has been an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) school for the past four years? Did you also know that Jackson was chosen to be an AVID National Showcase School during the 2018-2019 and again during this school year? Jackson will be showcasing our work with AVID on March 6th. This is an opportunity for educators from all over Colorado to see how AVID is used at Jackson.
What is AVID?
Advancement via Individual Determination “AVID” is a program that uses best practices to help support students in their learning. Students at Jackson have learned how to organize their thinking and notes. They have learned what it takes to be a Successful Student and how to work with one another to learn from each other. Students get to move more throughout the day, interacting with each other and the lessons being taught. We have seen a tremendous improvement in our state test scores and in every day learning. AVID is truly a wonderful program that has helped our students in every aspect of their learning!
Inclement Weather Policy
During these cold and unpredictable months, please encourage your child(ren) to come to school every day with the proper warm attire. If you are missing a coat/jacket, please stop by the Lost N Found or ask your child(ren) to stop by during the day. If the temperature is at or above 18 degrees, students will line up outside in the morning and go out for recess.
On a snowy, cold morning, please check your local news station, the District 11 webpage, the Jackson Facebook page, the D11 Loop to determine if there will be a Snow Day (ie. No school at all) or a 2-Hour Delay (school starting at 10:00am). If there is a 2-Hour Delay, students may not arrive before 9:45am. Breakfast is not served on these days, as lunch begins at 11:20, shortly after arrival.
Attendance and Tardies
Now that we are halfway through the school year, I wanted to thank you for helping to ensure the success of your student, by bringing them every day to school on time. I am sure you have noticed that we have high expectations for our students behaviorally and academically. It is very important that your child be on time to school every day. Jackson staff start instruction at 8:00am so even a few minutes late causes students to miss instruction. Please make sure to call the Attendance Line should your child(ren) need to be absent or late.
Read Across America Day -March 20, 2020
Our annual Read Across America Day is coming up! On the last day, before Spring Break, students will be engaged in activities throughout the day focused around reading. They will get the opportunity to hear stories read by community members, participate in reading-related lessons, and possibly participate in Reader’s Theater. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up as their favorite story book character for the day. It is a day not to be missed!
Thank you,
Sara G. Miller

The Jackson Elementary Battle of the Books team has been chosen. The 5th Grade students were selected by the number of books they have read since we began the Battle of the Books meetings in October.

We need help with shelving in the library on a weekly basis. If you are able to commit to a couple hours a week – that would be a huge help. Please contact Mrs. Sobecki (328-5824 or rhonda.sobecki@d11.org ) if you are able to volunteer.
