Our Focus this Week
What We are Learning This Week
· Reading & Writing Workshop: We will be exploring personification in poetry, picture poems, and reading with expression. Our driving question will be how we can incorporate these elements into our own poetry.
· Spelling: Suffixes -less and -ful
· Math Workshop: Geometry - We will be learning about lines of symmetry, congruent shapes, 3-D shapes, and types of triangles.
· Science: We will wrap up our unit on simple machines by making teaching posters in groups and trying to create a useful simple machine for our classroom.
Homework Ideas
Science: We began exploring simple machines last week. To continue our learning students will bring home an OPTIONAL Simple Machines Hunt on TUESDAY. Each student will also bring home his/her science book as an information resource. Please return the science book to school before Friday.
Reading: We are enjoying our poetry unit. As we explore this genre, we are encountering difficult vocabulary and new words. As your child learns new vocabulary, make it a challenge to use these words in conversation.
Teaching Tip: When your child finds a new word... Don’t immediately tell the unknown word to your child. Instead, ask him/her to:
•Break the word into parts
•Try a different vowel sound (long/short)
•Use illustrations for clues
•Skip the word, re-read sentence, and go back – what word would make sense?
