Principal's Comments
Welcome to 2022!
As expected, returning from the winter break means returning to winter weather. As we look at the forecast for the week of January 3rd, we can see that it will be cold, with low temperatures in the single digits. Please encourage your student to take the extra time to warm up the car and have winter weather gear at the ready (hat, gloves, boots, etc.) Planning ahead will allow for plenty of time to arrive at school for 1st period. Regular start time is 8:15 a.m. every day. Students with open lunch should plan to be back on time for 5th period, which starts at 12:30 p.m. each day. We will have special schedules for January 12 and 13 due to semester tests.

*make-up recovery opportunities will be determined by teachers
Please encourage your student to prepare for semester tests by reviewing prior materials (assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. as available), getting adequate sleep, and fueling their bodies and brains with nutritious meals. Please have conversations with them about time management and realistic study habits in the seven school days leading up to the tests. You can also talk about how your student positively manages the stress that comes with final exams.
There will be no school for students on Friday, January 14th as it is a work day for teachers to finalize semester grades. There will also be no school for students on Monday, January 17 as that is an inservice day for teachers. The second semester will start on Tuesday, January 18th. Students will need to check Infinite Campus for their 2nd semester schedules as we will NOT be printing schedules for students in an effort to conserve paper. First period will start at the regular time of 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18.
January is also the month where we begin the registration process for the 2022-23 school year. Counselors will be meeting with classes to go over course offerings, graduation requirements, credit status, etc. Registration is all done online. Please have conversations with your students about the course work he/she needs to be taking for the upcoming school year. Students need a total of 22 credits in order to earn a high school diploma. There are minimum requirements in each of the core areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.) Your students will receive all of that information when they meet with counselors to go over the registration process.
As always, if you have questions or concerns related to the end of the semester or the start of next semester, please feel free to reach out to the school - whether it is your student’s counselor or an administrator. Our number is (605) 367-7970.
Stay warm and Go, Warriors!

Stakeholder Listening and Learning
By: Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent
The education of our children is a true partnership between school, families, and our community. Research shows when all of us work together, student achievement increases. This year, the Sioux Falls District is fostering over 24,000 unique school/family partnerships, and the goals are the same for each - creating a positive educational experience and successful student outcome.
Parents and families are key to ensuring school success - making school attendance a priority, setting expectations for adequate sleep and nutrition, and insisting on homework completion/test preparation. Parents can encourage student participation in school activities and clubs, serving as cheerleaders because they know it connects students to each other and to their school.
Teachers are key in these partnerships as well, committing to creating engaging and informative lessons, offering meaningful projects, and assigning grades that reflect the curriculum being taught. Teachers are also influential in encouraging students to step out of their comfort zone to take part in activities as they discover what they are good at, what they love, and what they want to pursue beyond high school.
Community Engagement is one of our five focus areas in our District Priorities. Our belief statement says, “We believe when stakeholder relationships are intentionally cultivated, students grow through hands-on learning experiences and real-world work and career opportunities. Through these school-community partnerships, we believe students develop a deeper connection to living and working in Sioux Falls.”
This school year, the Sioux Falls School District is taking a purposeful approach to learning more from parent and family partners as we convene regular community engagement sessions using the World Café Model. This model provides an easy process for having conversations that matter as people get to know each other and collectively share their thoughts and ideas.
By early-December, we will have listened and learned from three communities that represent just a few of the many cultures in Sioux Falls. Native American families, Hispanic families, and Kunama families accepted our invitation to meet as we asked them to share their hopes and dreams for the future of their children. The conversations were powerful, and included topics of safety, transportation, preservation and celebration of cultures, after-school and extracurricular activities, and more.
Community engagement events like these will continue throughout the 2022 year and beyond because SFSD values partnerships. Our schools cannot do it alone. Successful students need school, parent, and community support. We look forward to continuing these conversations, and we cannot wait to turn the information we gather into action as we work to become the best school district in the Nation. We hope you’ll consider being involved when a World Café community engagement opportunity comes to a school or neighborhood near you!

School Meals
Welcome back to a new school year where we believe you will see many new things from Child Nutrition Services. We are thrilled to share with you the fact all meals, Breakfast and Lunch, are FREE again this year. This makes it easier for your checkbooks and for all students.
Please note that if your child brings a lunch and wants to purchase a milk, there will be a $.40 charge for the milk. Want to avoid the milk charge? “Pick 3 Free” - If your child chooses a fruit and vegetable to go with the milk, federal rules say we can make that count as a meal and not be required to charge you for the milk.
Even though meals are free, we are encouraging families to complete the Free/Reduced application online if you believe you may qualify for the benefit. This will help you with some of the other discounts you have counted on in the past if you have that confirmation.

If your student is in Middle or High School and they wish to purchase Ala Carte’ items, money can be put on their accounts through My School Bucks or by sending money or check with them to put on the account. If they do not have any money on the account, extra items cannot be purchased. To keep the lunch lines moving, we would appreciate if the money is dropped off at the beginning of the day so it is available in your child’s account. Change will not be given in the serving lines; all money will be placed on the student account.
