Be a Learner
February: A time for reflection, a time for resilience, a time for learning. In this month's Onward chapter, we focus on Being a Learner. Aguilar notes "If we see challenges as opportunities for learning, if we engage our curiosity whenever we're presented with an obstacle, we're more likely to find solutions. This habit and disposition help us not just survive adversity but thrive in the aftermath" (221.) How do we learn? How do we reflect? How do we change challenges into opportunities? How do those opportunities fit with our WHY? Aguilar clarifies "Learning, and its correlating disposition of curiosity, open a path for resilience that's sometimes overlooked" (223.) As we pique the curiosity of our students, can we deepen our understanding of their why, encapsulate how they learn and reflect, and lead them to the mindset of challenges as opportunities for learning? What is your mindset?
The video clip this week is the perfect crossover for I Love to Read Month, our WHY, challenges, opportunities and learning. We've got this!

Author/Illustrator Terri Michels in Residence March 31, 2020
Imagine this, your students engaged in conversation with a popular children’s author or illustrator. Asking questions about book ideas, about characters in a book, about pictures matching the story. When authors and illustrators share ideas about writing and illustrating, students listen. A visit from an author or illustrator can expose students to a wondrous world of reading, writing and illustrating. As authors and illustrator come to speak to young people, they often inspire them to want to read great books and write with more confidence.
Students in local elementary classrooms meet an established author/illustrator who share their personal adventures of creating and publishing books. This program encourages the love of reading and inspires students to write and illustrate. They will share how they generate ideas that turn into stories, what inspires them, the publishing process, some of the challenges and the successes, trials and errors.
- Here is a sample statement that can be used to email or send home to parents. Note to Parents about Book Orders
