Mrs. Birkland's Kindergarten Class

Room 108

Last week we studied the sounds for th and sh. This week we studied ch/_tch "choo choo train" and was introduced to ph "phone" and wh "wheezing whale." We do not expect them to spell using ph and wh, but we do hope that they learn to use ch, sh, and th in words when they hear those sounds. We reviewed our poems for Rr, Ii, Ff, and Hh and met our last words of the quarter-for, so, was, and have. That makes 40 words! Whew!

This week we learned that the number 10 is such an important number in our math system. We need to be able to begin to memorize what numbers when added to another makes 10. We called these friends of 10. We learned that 0 and 10 are friends, 1 and 9 are friends, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 is friends with itself. :) We added a fun new app called Franklin's Friends of 10. These will help us get these "friends" stuck in our brains. We also learned that the number line 0-10, acts like a rainbow to help us remember, too. How cool!

We loved learning about the last 2 seasons this week. We wrapped up our study by telling what our favorite season is. Did you see our pictures on seesaw? We made a little window showing what we would see outside if we were looking out the window during our favorite season. We hung them up in the hallway for a really cute display. :) Also, check out our 4 season trees!

Special Guest on Friday-Season of Giving-iWeek Reveal

On Friday, after lunch we had a special guest come and visit our kindergarten hallway. His name was Mr. Eric and he talked to us about how hard it is for some people in our area during the winter season. He is a professional story teller and former Hillcrest Inc. worker. He helped paint the picture that even though we are young and don't have much, we can still give smiles, laughter, love, and joy to others during this time of year. He set the stage for our awesome iWeek activities next week. They are so excited, they can't wait!

Buddy Time

We met with our 3rd grade buddies Friday afternoon to practice reading our opinion pieces with them. Our big day and time to read them to our special audience is next Friday. This was great practice, fun, and a good way to get to know our buddies better. Check out your child's picture reading with their buddy on SeeSaw (to be added soon). When we were done, we colored together and had candy canes. A fun bonding time. :)

Hour of Code Part 2

This week we participated in another hour of code. We learned about a new coding app called The Foos. I am sure you have heard of it at home. We loved it so much. This was an awesome app for encourage communication between them. When someone would get stuck, they would not give up, but ask around for ideas or help. They worked together to get through so many levels. I loved the little hum of chatter as they built their own worlds.

Caring Donations

Thank you sooooo much! We got so many donations that we will have an awesome time filling more than enough care bags next week. We can't wait!

We have 13 parents accessing SeeSaw. That is awesome. If you are not able to access it, can you let me know and I will try to find a way to help you see how your child is doing in class. Just let me know.

I wonder (things to ask your child at home)

  • What was your favorite season? What happens to animals in the fall? winter? spring?
  • What are some activities you would do in the fall? winter? spring? summer?
  • What did Mr. Eric talk to you all about?
  • When we talk about friends of 10...who is friends with 5? (5) 6? (4), 7? (3) 8? (2), 9? (1), 10? (0)
