Mathematician Monday
7th grade math students in Miss Merryman's class learned about Gladys West who is featured in the movie "Hidden Figures". West was born on a farm in rural Virginia. West walked three miles each way to school every day and knew that education would be her ticket out of farm life.
"At first, she was a human computer, doing the math out longhand herself, but she then transitioned to programming computers, the machines. Through the early 1960s, West worked on an astronomical study that proved the regularity of Pluto’s motion relative to Neptune i.e. for every two orbits Pluto makes, Neptune makes three, a phenomenon called “orbital resonance”.
"West used the information from Seasat and other satellites to refine over the years an increasingly detailed and accurate mathematical model of the actual shape of the earth – called a “geoid”. This computational modeling would prove essential to modern GPS, as the technology relies on this mathematical model in order to determine the position of a receiver."

Renaissance February Meeting
Our February Renaissance meeting was centered around the theme love! Renaissance student leaders watched a short video from The Harbor series called "Rooted in Love". The video message discussed the ups and downs and many emotions we have all experienced throughout the pandemic. Students extended the lesson by having deeper discussions through a Jamboard to learn more about coping skills, supporting one another, and gaining a sense of community whether we are together or not. This meeting really reminded us about our school theme "Don't Stop Believin'!" and also to recognize our school's unsung heroes! Thank you all for all you do.
