Summary of Bull Run
The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle during the Civil War. This battle was fought on July 16, 1861 in Virginia. Irvin McDowell marched his Union soldiers marched from Washington to Bull Run behind Centreville. On the 21st McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederates left flank on Matthews Hill. Fighting lasted for days until the Confederates ran to Henry Hill. Then later on Confederate reinforcements came and destroyed the Union soldiers. Union soldiers were forced to retreat so they ran back to Washington.
