Watergate Scandal - June 17, 1972 - Nixon and his staff broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters and "bugged" the offices. Nixon was trying to get secret information from the Democrats as a strategic advantage during election time, but backfired when caught in the act. Nixon attempts to deny the fact that he was involved and states, "I can say categorically that... no one in the White House staff, no one in this Administration, presently employed, was involved in this very bizarre incident". Watergate led to the first resignation in US history, and gave Nixon a bad reputation as the 37th president of the United States.
