Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 1/31/2022

Advanced Band Solo & Ensemble Contest

Saturday, Feb. 19th, 8am

Austin Academy for Excellence

All eligible Symphonic, Honors, and Wind Symphony students will perform a solo (and some will also perform an ensemble) on Saturday, February 19. They will dress up nicely and perform for a judge with a piano accompanist. A portion of their score comes from physical presentation so the nicer they dress, the better!

We will begin piano rehearsals the week of January 31. Please see this link for the piano rehearsal schedule (TAKE NOTE OF THE 3 TABS AT THE BOTTOM) which takes place before school or during class. A portion of each student's band fees pays for the accompanist rehearsals and the performance on the 19th.

Students who do not appear on the list have been spoken with already. If you have any questions about the status of a student's piano rehearsals or eligibility for the Solo & Ensemble Contest, please let us know.

All-Region Clinic/Concert

We had 24 Hudson students earn a spot in the TMEA Region 3 All-Region Band. Their clinic and concert was on Saturday, January 22. They spent 7 hours rehearsing with a guest conductor and put on a concert on Saturday night. They represented our school so well and played beautifully! We are so glad that they were able to have this experience and proud of all their hard work. We can't wait to do it again next year with 30+ kids!

Percussion Sectionals

Wind Symphony and Honors Band percussionists will NO LONGER have sectionals on Wednesdays after school. Due to the high school rehearsal schedule, Mr. Tucker will come over during class on Wednesdays to pull those students out for sectionals. Thank you for your flexibility as we have worked through the scheduling conflicts with the high school!

Charms Logins

Please take a moment this week to login to your student's Charms account. Make sure to login as a Parent/Student/Member. You will need to use hudsonsoundmachine as the school code. Student passwords should be either just the 6-digit ID number (for first time logins), sID# (that students are used to), or something different you or your student has chosen. If you need help resetting a password, please let me know. When you ask for a password to be reset, I will change it to CAPITALIZED first and last initial followed by student ID# (ex. HB123456).

After logging in, you can see payments due in the financial tab, make changes to personal information, see uniform parts that have been checked out, school-owned instrument information, and more.

As a reminder from last week, spring band fees are due February 4. If you have a financial hardship, please communicate that with us so we can help!

Using the Charms System for Band

Pre-UIL Showcase Concert

Monday, Feb. 28th, 6pm

Hudson Middle School Cafeteria

Honors Band and Wind Symphony students will perform their UIL pieces for parents in the cafeteria. After the stage performance we will transition to the band hall so parents can see us work through the sightreading procedure.

Band Rehearsals During Intersession

We will have more information next week about the plan for band rehearsals and help sessions during intersession. We will have UIL rehearsals for students in the Wind Symphony and Honors Band. We will also offer times for Symphonic and Beginner Band students to get extra help and practice together. Times and more detailed information will come soon!

What Should We Be Practicing?

Practicing should happen daily to help build coordination and muscle memory and retain progress. Students should practice sitting in a real chair (preferably one that doesn't roll/spin), using a music stand, with a metronome. Please make sure woodwind players are properly swabbing out their instrument at the end of every practice session to keep their instruments clean!

Beginner Band:

Rhythm Rockers units 1-5, Musical Mastery warm-up exercises, pages 9-12 in Sound Innovations, Double Reeds units 5 & 6 in Boot Camp book, SCALES!!! We have started Scale Masters and will award a trophy to the first student in each class who passes off all of their scales

Symphonic Band: Longtones 1A, Concert Bb, F Ab, Eb, Db scales, rhythm chart 1-8, Solo, concert music

Honors Band: Longtones 1A, Set 1 Opt.1, Set 1 Opt. 4, Concert Bb, Eb, F, and Ab scales, rhythm charts 7-10, UIL songs, solo

Reminders from Previous Updates

Winter 50 Day Challenge

Students received a new practice challenge just before we left for the winter break. It challenges them to practice for 50 days before February 19. They will be invited to a before school donut party and an after school game party if they complete the challenge.

Are You Handy? Like to Build Things?

I have grand visions of organizing our percussion storage room over the next few weeks because it's too small and we have too much equipment. If you happen to be handy and want to help build shelves for our cymbals, drum pads, and drum stands, please let me know! This picture is similar to what I have in mind.

Instrument Usage Fees in Skyward

If your student plays a school-owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, tenor/bari sax, French horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and select others), their district school-owned instrument usage fee is reflected in their Skyward account now. These directions to submit an online payment in Skyward should help you with completing that payment. Please let Mrs. Becker know if you have questions.
