The Weekly Word from CDS FP - April 1-April 12, 2019
Looking Back
Hello All,
We’ve had two weeks of school since being back from back from Spring Break. It has been great to hear the students’ stories of their travels and how they spent their time on the break. Since returning, school has been busy with events: Track and Field, Battle of the Books, field trip, art auction, parent teacher conferences - just to name a few.
Track and Field and Battle of the Books have more in depth write-ups below by Mr. T and Ms. Choo, but for now I wanted to say a big thank you to all the parents who came out to support the students: the PTA table selling food, the parents cheering on the kids - what a great day of fun competition and sportsmanship. And we got lucky with the weather - the air quality was good and the rain started a couple hours after track and field was finished. I am sure the students were tired Saturday night!
Thanks to Mr. T and Ms. Choo for excellent planning; thanks to the PTA for their commitment; thanks to the teachers, our business director Mr. Kang, and the wonderful facility team who made the day and both events a success. Well done, everyone!
PK and K enjoyed their annual field trip to our local community, Cheongna. They visited important institutions such as the post office, police station, Lake Park, and the grocery store.
Our Silent Art Auction occurred throughout this past week. More details about that event in the next newsletter.
Parent Teacher Conferences were Friday - thank you for your time and effort to join us to communicate about the success of your children at school. Please do also feel welcome at any time to contact us - homeroom teachers, specialists, administration - to communicate your questions or suggestions.
Lastly, we are excited about the new regulation size basketball nets that have been recently installed in the FP gym! There is a photo below!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Grade 4, Korean class, PreK, Kindergarten, ELL, Battle of the Books, and Track and Field. Thank you, Mr. Baker, Ms. Kim, Ms. Lee, Ms. Pabon, Ms. Kim, Ms. Choo, and Mr. T.
Grade 4 with Mr. Baker
This week in Grade 4 we have working with fractions - changing improper fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa!
I, Mr. Baker, took a break from teaching and let some of the experts take over. Great job, guys!
Korean Class with Ms. Kim
이번 주에 4학년 학생들은 문장 이어 말하기 활동을 했습니다.
This week, the fourth-grade students created a new story where each student took a turn to make one sentence. It was a really interesting activity!
Wendy's team members made up the story about a hungry panda. The story started with a Panda eating hamburger and chicken. They ended up saying "Panda is our friend".
Pre-K with Ms. Lee
Aiden is really tall. (He is the) tallest in Pre-K. This week we choose one of the objects in our class to measure it with popsicle sticks.
Grade K with Ms. Pabon
This week, kindergarten was learning about severe weather. They were explained that severe weather is that kind of weather that put people, animals and plants in danger. One of the most powerful kinds of severe or extreme weather are tornadoes. Kindergarteners were impressed to see how tornadoes occur and how strong they could be. They were constantly asking if tornadoes could happen in South Korea and what we can do to protect ourselves. They got so excited to see a small tornado in a bottle.
“Tornadoes are part of severe weather because they destroy cities”, said Tsnym.
ELL with Ms. Kim
The question of this week was “If you have magic power, what would you like to have?” Enseo said “teleportation because I always get tagged when I play with my friends.”
Battle of the Books with Ms. Choo
On Saturday, April 6, 2019, 4th and 5th grade students participated in Battle of the Books. This was the fifth year that CDS participated and it was special because it was hosted right here at Dalton! We welcomed teams from nine other international schools for a day of friendly competition and celebrating a love of reading. Although Dalton teams, Phoenix Fire and Phoenix Ice, spent three months preparing for the competition with coaches Mr. Baker and Mr. Cavasin, a team from KIS Pangyo ultimately became the champions of Battle of the Books 2019. However, the Battle of the Books is not just about winning, and CDS students said they enjoyed reading the books and had fun at the competition. Congratulations to CDS teams for cultivating teamwork and sportsmanship, and putting their efforts towards becoming better readers!

Track and Field with Mr. Tronsgard
On Saturday April 6th, CDS hosted the first ever PK-2 Track and Field event. Over 130 students from GSIS, CI, KIS and CDS participated in 7 different events (hurdles, 50m, 200m, javelin, quoit toss, high jump and triple hop). The air quality and rain was a concern, but the weather held off and it ended up being a great day out on the field. It was fantastic to see so many CDS parents out supporting their children and helping to sell food at the concession stand.
