A note from your School Board Representative
HSSD Safety Update
The HSSD Safety and Security Committee has used State Safety Grant money to train employees on ALICE (threat response) and Trauma Informed Care (mental wellness). The Committee will continue to engage more students, parents, and community partners to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff. Perhaps this is the most important work the Committee is accomplishing, as everyone’s voice matters in regard to safety and security. Doing what we can to protect our students, parents, and staff is our most important responsibility. If you have questions for the Board of Education, please reach out to your Board member Vanessa Moran at vanemora@hssdschools.org.
Student Council Updates
On March 14, they are raising money for the Heavenly Hats Foundation. Please bring a $1.00 to school and wear your favorite hat all day long! All the money will be donated to a terrific cause that benefits kids with cancer in the Green Bay area.
On March 22 - all students will be participating in our school wide incentive dance. To make this event even more fun, student council will be selling glow sticks that can be used during the event. Sales for the glowsticks will take place March 15-21. Please send money in an envelope, labeled with your child's name and teacher; along with the amount of money enclosed and how many you would like to purchase. Envelopes should be turned in to your child's teacher; and glow sticks will be handed out the day of the dance.
Parents of 4th grade Students
4th Grade Parents: On Wednesday, March 13th, students in 4th grade will visit Lineville Intermediate School for a Music Class Demonstration. Your child will need to choose a music class for 5th grade. Musicians in Band, Chorus, and Orchestra will perform for the 4th graders and discuss the music class options. After March 13th you will be able to register your choices for music and other classes using an internet link which will be emailed to you. Class registrations will be due by March 22nd.
More information about the music classes is available on the March 13th registration document and is also accessible on music class websites: http://linevillehssd.weebly.com/music.html

What Is PBIS?
PBIS is an approach schools can use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. It also helps schools decide how to respond to a child who misbehaves.
At its heart, PBIS calls on schools to teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about any other subject—like reading or math. PBIS recognizes that kids can only meet behavior expectations if they know what the expectations are. Throughout the school day—in class, at lunch and on the bus—kids understand what’s expected of them.
PBIS has a few important guiding principles:
- Every child can learn proper behavior.
- Stepping in early can prevent more serious behavior problems.
- Each child is different and schools need to provide many kinds of behavior support.
- How schools teach behavior should be based on research and science.
- Following a child’s behavioral progress is important.
- Schools must gather and use data to make decisions about behavior problems.
Keep in mind that PBIS is not a treatment or therapy. It’s a framework for teachers, administrators and parents to follow. It’s also important to know that when a school uses PBIS, it uses it for all students.
Guidance Counselor Corner
Do you struggle with your child's "squirrel like" attention span? Ever ask yourself, what am I doing wrong as a parent? You're not alone! Here are some helpful tidbits of information to help take back your parent swag and help educate about attention struggles.
Children ages 5-6 years old typically can attend to one activity that is of interest to them for around 10-15 minutes at a time and should generally be able to filter out small distractions occurring simultaneously in the environment.
As a guideline some research suggests using a child’s age as a general starting point for the number of minutes a child can attend to a single assigned task…so 5 minutes for a 5 year old, 7 minutes for a 7 year old, etc. Small groups of children may be able to play together for 15 minutes or up to a 1/2 hour if they are engaged in novel, interesting play activities. Children ages 6-7 years may be able to sustain attention to one interesting or novel task for as long a 30 minutes. (Day2DayParenting website)

Let’s Talk! with Mrs. VanAsten and Mrs. Heim, Speech-Language Pathologists
It was a pleasure being able to meet with some of you again during Parent/Teacher conferences this past month. By attending conferences you are a partner in your child’s education and want them to succeed as a learner. On a more personal level, we would like to thank the families of our speech & language students. We know that they would not be able to make as much progress if it weren’t for the carry-over efforts of the home-to-school connection.
The next skills we would like to work on are conversation skills; turn taking, eye contact, attentive listening, and topic maintenance to name a few. Some of our students created their own version of the popular conversation heart candies. We wrote down some topics that would spark conversation and used these as a starting point for our discussions. Topics included “Who is your favorite book character and why?”, or “Tell me about your most memorable vacation.” When engaging in discussion, be sure to make and maintain eye contact with the person you are speaking with. Take turns speaking (without interrupting!) so that each member of the discussion feels included. By asking and answering questions, you will be showing that you are listening attentively to the other speakers. See if you can maintain the topic of the conversation for a predetermined amount of time (3 minutes? 5 minutes? 10?). These basic conversational skills are prerequisites for much of the communicating we do throughout our lives. By providing a good role model for your children, they can build on these skills as they grow.
As always, thank you for being an active participant in your child’s learning!
Warm regards,
Mrs. Katie VanAsten
Mrs. Julie Heim
