CDL-Only and Edgenuity FAQ
What is Edgenuity?
Edgenuity® is a leading provider of K–12 online learning solutions, partnering with schools and districts throughout the country to provide the tools and support they need to maximize learning and improve student success. We have been using it with great success at Ashland Connect at JMOS. The parent of a fourth grade student recently shared, “I am really impressed by the material, ease of access and how organized everyone is around it. (Student) is really taking to it!” You can learn more about the program by watching the videos found here.
Is all the learning with Edgenuity limited to the screen?
No. Actually the Edgenuity program for grades k-5 is very well balanced in terms of on and off screen activities and expectations. Students have printed materials to work through as well as supplementary materials like novels in the older grades.
Is my student still with their same teacher and classmates?
Yes and no. Your students will still be in their same class and will meet with the whole class via zoom at least once a week on Wednesdays. They will also participate in schoolwide activities and celebrations. Their academic instruction will be through Edgenuity with the support of a CDL (on-line only) Ashland Teacher.
How do I contact my teachers?
Edgenuity has a communication system built in the platform. Your teachers should be reaching out to you on at least a weekly basis, but as questions arise, please utilize this feature within Edgenuity. You can also book virtual meetings with your teacher through their contact in Edgenuity.
You will also have regular contact with your Ashland School District CDL only teacher assigned to your student’s school. They will reach out to you frequently, set up opportunities to connect and provide support, and are available via e-mail as all of our teachers are.
You will also have at least weekly contact with your student’s current teacher. They will be working closely with the Ashland CDL only teacher to ensure for a smooth transition.
How many hours a day are expected to complete coursework?
Edgenuity suggests spending 50 – 60 minutes per course per day. For K-5 grade levels, this includes four common core classes: common core math, common core language arts, common core science, and common core social studies. It is also important to schedule brain breaks, discuss lessons, and set goals outside of Edgenuity for student success.
How do I know if I’m staying on pace with my online courses?
There is a pacing tool within Edgenuity that updates with how many assignments are submitted. While it is a useful tool, we don’t want your student to be hyper focused and stressed about the pacing tool. It is merely a guide to make sure you are moving along in a course. Additionally, the assignments are organized by date in the course map so you know exactly what you should be completing per day.
How does Attendance work?
Students should be logging on to Edgenuity and making progress every school day. We track attendance through “activity” on Edgenuity. That might not necessarily mean completing progress in every subject as students may want to focus on one subject per day. However, it is a benefit to follow along with the pacing Edgenuity has laid out to make sure your student is keeping on track. If you would like to pre-clear an absence your student may have, you would contact the office manager at your school.
What if my student needs academic supports?
Students will continue to get support from their current specialists, including reading specialists, math specialists, Child Development Specialist, ELD teachers and Special Education Supports.
What will the transition look like?
The transition will occur on April 26th. There will be parent and student trainings to learn more about Edgenuity, and the Ashland CDL only teachers will be setting up times to meet with each family to make sure everything is in place to make the transition as successful as possible.
If we choose the CDL option for Spring, are we committed to that option for the fall as well? No, making the decision to be in CDL this spring doe snot impact your choice for the coming year. However, if you are considering the Ashland Connect program for the coming school year this could be a great opportunity to preview the Edgenuity program and see how it may meet the needs of your student and family.
Calendar Change: All Sites No School April 22, 23 for Transition
There will be no school for all students on April 22 and 23 to allow for transition activities at all sites.
Remember that school ends late this year on June 18 due to the week lost during the Almeda fire.
