February Mindset - Live to Give
Brookwod Oratorical Contest
This quarter, fifth graders all across Forsyth County have been participating in the annual Optimist International Oratorical Speech Contest. The topic for this year's speech is "JUST IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT BOUNDARIES?" All Brookwood's fifth grade students wrote a speech on the assigned topic and delivered it in front of their classmates and teachers! Each writing class chose one student to compete in Brookwood's Oratorical Finals.
On Wednesday, February 19 Lilianna Cardenas from Mrs. Agramonte’s homeroom class was chosen to represent Brookwood at the Forsyth County Elementary Semifinals.
Congratulations Lilianna and best of luck in the County Semifinals! Also, congratulations to all of the classroom winners who participated in Brookwood's Oratorical Finals. All of the speeches were amazing!

The Annual Festival of the Arts - Passion First Night
Save the Date: Thursday, March 19
Your children have been preparing their art for months! Right now, diligent students are coming into the art room to finish up incomplete projects. Every artist is choosing their favorite piece of art to display and signing, titling, and writing about their work. Once all the art is mounted and sorted by classroom, we send it to the framers for the big night! Our PTO volunteers are hard at work gluing the artwork to the art show papers for framing and checking rosters.
This year we will have choral performances by students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade, in addition to our third, fourth, and fifth grade choruses. Your children are hard at work in their music classes preparing songs for the big night too!
Please put Thursday, March 19 on your calendar now. You won’t want to miss this exciting event!

Read Across America Day Book Character Costume Day
On Monday, March 2, 2020, it will be Read Across America Day. One way we want to celebrate books is by having a book character costume day. It doesn't need to be elaborate, just creative! What's your child's favorite book character? Is it Fly Guy? Or perhaps, Jack or Annie from Magic Tree House? There are so many to pick from. This is their opportunity to show everyone. Join in the fun and dress as your favorite book character that day.
Book Drive March 2-6: Looking for Gently Used Books
Spring Cleaning? This is a great opportunity to clean off the book shelves. During the week of March 2 - 6, we are collecting gently used books for K-12 reading levels. They will be given to students in the county who do not have access to books for summer reading.
Donations may be dropped off in the front office donation box, or in the media center.
If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Lessard, Brookwood Media Specialist at Klessard@forsyth.k12.ga.us
Exceptional Children's Week: March 2 - 6
Remember all of those kind words of love and encouragement that the Bobcats wrote on the Kindness tree? Wouldn’t it be neat to capture some of their words and create a lasting memory of it? We wanted to create something that represented “Us” as Bobcats so our very own Exceptional Children’s Week t-shirt has been specially designed and is now ready for order!!! Not only will you and your family get a soft, high quality shirt with a one of a kind design, ALL proceeds will go towards our “Be the Change” fundraiser. We are looking forward to ECW as we continue to learn more about each other and work together towards raising funds for our school. This year we are focusing on sensory equipment that will improve skills in many areas for all children in every class. See the flyer for all details and ordering information! Orders must be placed by THIS Sunday, February 23!!
***On Friday, February 28th there will be a special presentation, for all students,
leading into Exceptional Children's Week ~
Please remember to wear your Be Kind to Everyone apparel on this day!***

Science Lab Volunteers Needed
Parents,
We have another great opportunity for you to come in and help our school. Mrs. Hayes needs parent volunteers to help in the Science Lab. She needs support just once a week (at your convenience) for about one hour. Tasks will include helping put lab materials away, helping label lab materials and any other small tasks she may need help with to support your students in the science lab. The sign-up volunteer list can be found here and it is currently listed on Mondays, however, you may come anytime Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. to assist the week that you sign up. Please use the comments to indicate which day of the week you intend to volunteer so we can let the school and Mrs. Hayes know. Thank you in advance for supporting the school through volunteering!
Six Flags Read to Succeed Reading Program
Read to Succeed is a free program that allows students in grades K-5 to earn a ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia just by reading six hours for fun.
The process is new this year. Each student needs the help of their parent to register for the program using a special class code unique to their homeroom teacher. A sheet was sent home before Thanksgiving break with the classroom code on it. Please contact your student’s homeroom teacher if you still need the code. Next go to www.sixflags.com/books and register your child. Each Brookwood child needs to be registered in your family under their homeroom teacher. Each time a child reads for fun, record your child’s reading on the Six Flag’s site.
All reading and the recording online needs to be complete by April 3, 2020. No late entries will be allowed. Once your child has read six hours, they will qualify for a free ticket. Six Flag tickets will be distributed in May.
Happy Reading!

Family Connect Nights!
Brookwood works with our middle and high school feeder schools to have a combined Family Connect Night once a month. This night is designed to put down homework and connect as a family. Some great ideas are to try something new, cook dinner together, have a puzzle night, game night, go for a walk or anything where you change up your routine and be in the moment! Be on the lookout for how we will post pics of your awesome Family Night!
