Advantages of a Small School Environment - Part 2
Last month we featured an article by Bruce Barker where he discusses some of the advantages of a small school environment. This month we continue to highlight some of the points raised in the article.
ADMINISTRATION
Small schools are manageable. There is usually less red tape and fewer regulations. Scheduling is much more flexible than in a large school, and schedules can be easily altered to accommodate instructional activities.
- We definitely agree with this observation. With a small school we have the flexibility to integrate project based learning, field trips, or just utilize an alternate approach to teaching a topic - in part because we are not bound by a rigid school calendar and are not having to focus on getting our kids ready for the STAAR exam.
- Our directors interact daily with our teachers, parents, and students to keep track of what is happening in the school and in order to be as responsive as needed.
CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
Due to low pupil/teacher ratios, the school is more likely to be learner-centered, with strong emphasis placed on individualized and small group instruction. By contrast, large schools with large class sizes have traditionally led to reliance on lecture and objective tests that stress recall. The potential for student self identity, participation, and expression is thereby enhanced in small schools.
- Exactly on point! At 4PA we are all about our students, and our curriculum and instruction are adapted to the needs of our students. We assess and analyze the needs of each student and integrate strategies to address the individual student's needs.
