Notes from the Principal
This week brought about some change for schools in Oklahoma County when the Oklahoma County Health Department reinstated quarantine procedures for schools in Oklahoma County. We have been diligently contact tracing as well as sending detailed procedures to those who have been exposed. It is extremely important to contact the school immediately when or if your child test positive or you plan to quarantine your child based on a family exposure. Time is important because contact tracing immediately begins once the school has been notified. Our communication to families includes an automated phone call as well as a detailed email regarding quarantine, etc.
Here are links to the district webpage regarding these updates and protocols-

If we should happen to call you to quarantine for your student - one of the items that you can provide is proof of COVID vaccination. We are not allowed to ask that question - but - should you provide the documentation - it does mean the difference between having to quarantine and simply monitoring the health of your student. The choice for disclosure of vaccination falls on the parent or guardian of the student. Remember - should you have any questions regarding COVID quarantine procedures or rules - please contact our Central COVID Captain - Mr. Link Lowe 405-726-5703

Students who are quarantined are able to complete work through courses on Canvas. Students should login each day to check the course agenda page and if they have questions they should reach out to their teachers.
To help mitigate the impact of COVID at Cheyenne - we are amending our procedure for Parent Information Night. (August 23rd) At this time - we are still planning on hosting but - we would like for you to consider attending virtually through a release of videos scheduled for August 22. See the information below.
We will keep you informed with the latest information regarding health and safety updates. Thank you to those families that have contacted us regarding their student and self-reported COVID exposures or positive test results. Our goal is to keep the education process moving forward for your student.

Details for Parent Information Night
Monday night is Parent Information Night. We have two options for parents. Parents may choose to attend in person or digitally by accessing the digital information below.
Beginning at 6:00pm parents will spend 8 minutes in each of your student’s classes. Teachers will share the curriculum goals, skills, objectives, and major themes they plan to cover throughout the year.
Because the time in each class period is short, there will not be an opportunity to ask questions regarding your own child’s progress. However, each teacher will share his/her planning period time, phone number and email so that you can ask your questions in a more personal setting.
If you choose to attend in person, then you will follow your student's schedule and spend 8 minutes in each class with 5 minutes in-between. We encourage you to print the document below and have your students fill in their schedule. You may also access their schedule through the Parent Portal.
Parent Information Flyer (print if you will be in-person)
If you are unable to attend in person, we have provided a digital open house with all the same information that is presented in person. Many of you have already received individual class information letters and read over this information because it may have gone home with your child last week.
Digital Parent Information Night (click to view the welcome page to digital Information Night)
Just a reminder parking and seating are limited. Please remember this is an evening just for parents.

DROPPING OFF ITEMS (the cart will be ready very soon)
We ask that you check with your student before they walk out the door and make sure they are prepared for the day. This includes having their, Chromebook, ID and Lunch. If your student does forget their lunch or something they need for school, we have a cart in our front lobby with grade levels. This will be rolled back into the common area for the students to pick up their items during passing. Please drop off LUNCHES or SCHOOL SUPPLIES ONLY.
If you are dropping off an instrument or athletic equipment we will place this by the back office door for them to come up and get during their passing or after school. Please make arrangements with your student regarding these items and where to retrieve them.
Use the remind codes below to receive messages from our Parent Organization!
School Doors Open 7:10am- 3:00pm
Instructional Day 7:40am-2:15pm
All students enter the front doors and they eat breakfast in the cafeteria or report to their advisory class.
Don't forget to bring a refillable waterbottle in your backpack!
Breakfast and Lunch are free for students when they select items to fulfill guidelines
Supply Kit Orders
When the second round of prepurchased supply kits arrive we will deliver them to your child and let you know they are here.
Student Chromebook Information
All students should CHARGE their Chromebooks each night. There are important updates that need to occur on these devices regularly and students will need to shut them down and restart.
All students received an email regarding their Annual Student Review. If they misplaced that email here are the instructions for completing the review before school starts.
For our incoming 6th grade students and anyone new to Cheyenne - you received your Chromebook last week. We will log in and set everything up this week.
Student Technology Protection Plan (STPP) - All families are strongly encouraged to purchase an STPP for their students to help protect them from large fees associated with accidental damage to the school-issued Chromebook. Search InTouch on the district website to purchase the 20-21 STPP. This plan goes into effect on 8/12.

Schedules
We absolutely do our best to accommodate student and family requests, but we are operating within a tight schedule to keep class and team numbers.
Schedule and team changes are not options. We can attempt to address repeat courses(2 PE courses or 2 Spanish courses), required and/or qualifying courses, and missing courses. These adjustments need to be communicated to the appropriate grade level counselor
6th-grade Melissa.Krause@edmondschools.net
7th-grade Lindsey.speligene@edmondschools.net, and
8th-grade Dana.Black@edmondschools.net
Counselors are also able to address any specific questions regarding class descriptions.
It is vital for you to know we want to give everyone their dream schedule but it is an impossible task to fulfill all 900 student/parent dreams and wishes for teachers, courses, and teams. Remember that we want class sizes that support student learning, and if schedules are changed, it causes an unfair advantage by adjusting class numbers and team numbers. (Note: We have an average of 300 kids per grade level which impacts class sizes between 30-35.)
I am sure there have been tears and angst amongst students at the unveiling of schedules. These feelings are perfectly normal, and students experience them each year at the beginning of school. I know that feeling as a parent (I have two school-age students myself, and one is an 8th grader and the other is a 11th grader) when they are in distress we want to fix it. I do too! However, it is essential to know that we won't be able to accommodate changes. I wish we could. It is not in our nature as educators to make people unhappy. We want everyone to be happy. So, I ask you to please sit down with your child and help us soothe and assure them that it will be okay. We will take great care of your child as they navigate middle school life and preadolescence. But we can't do it alone; we need your help in this mission. Life is not always comfortable, and often things do not go as we want them. We know this as adults, but kids are still learning this. Thank you for partnering with us on this journey!
