A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
AWARDS NIGHT 2017
SUCCESS - PRENDIVILLE STYLE
I have a very strong belief in the power of affirmation and look forward to celebrating student personal success and excellence being recognised at Awards Night next week. The evening is about honoring excellence. At Prendiville Catholic College we need to be very clear on what we mean by excellence and how we measure it.
We must measure excellence of our College beyond our buildings, academic results and first places in competitions. Let us be guided by the words of one of our House Patrons Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, who reminded us to “judge not your success by your numbers or the quality of your building but by the quality of your hearts and your efforts to live the Call of the Gospel”. The following definition of excellence from the Virtues Project is a definition we could consider at our College:
"Excellence is doing your best, giving careful attention to every task and every relationship. Excellence is effort guided by a noble purpose. It is a desire for perfection. The perfection of a seed comes in the fruit. When you practice excellence, you bring your gifts to fruition. Excellence is the key to success.” (The Virtues Project).
In our 30th Year celebrations I am particularly proud that the following people will be present at the awards evening:
Mr William Woodruff – Foundation Principal
Pat Sydney-Smith - Foundation Secretary
Mr Roger Langton – Foundation Chair
Megan Woodall – Inaugural Head Girl
Stefan Langton – Inaugural Head Boy
For the second time we will present the "Spirit of Prendiville Award” and "The Redmond Prendiville Award" which capture the essence of what it is to be an exemplary “Prendivillian”. The award criteria set by the class of 2015 seeks to acknowledge the student or students who:
Displays pride in being a student of our College (serve)
Displays outstanding integrity, service and dependability (lead)
Enriches the lives of others, and;
Is a positive influence on our College community (inspires)
At awards night we will also honor our retiring Board Chair Mrs Michele Walker and retiring board member Mr Brad Harvey who have served on our college board for six years.

HUMANITIES EXTENSION AMAZING RACE AROUND PRENDIVILLE
PLEASE NOTE- The activity was an interactive walk around the school for the 6 quickest pairs responding to a direct message sent on Thursday morning, week 3
It all started with a single direct message. Ashling didn't respond, she thought the six spots had already been taken. But Jess, with a glimmer of hope in her heart, responded. Against all odds we got in, last, but not least (as the rest of the school were soon to find out). The anxious wait almost killed us but the day had finally arrived. Saying goodbye to Friday period 6, 3:25pm, our adventure was just beginning. We hastily ran toward the gym, ready to take on the world. We met out guide and embarked on our journey. The puzzles continued to increase in intensity as we progressed through the course until we got up to the unsolvable...what was the name of the tapping sticks? We didn't know what to do! We paced, cried and screamed for help and our guide wouldn't even help us. By the time it was over we had experienced a rush of emotions from frustration to a sense of inner calmness upon completion. When the scores were being tallied, Jess almost fainted. Ashling knew we had no chance. But Jess maintained that glimmer of hope. ‘And the winner is...Jess and Ashling!!’ Tears of joy poured of our eyes. We would like to thank the Humanities Department and Extension Group for taking the time to plan and map the race making it a really good way to finish the stressful testing week. Also, a big thank you to Mr Lynch for organising the race and schedule for the day and for this truly amazing race.

COMMUNITY ART PROJECT
The Beaumaris Shopping Centre Bus Stop received a colourful makeover last month thanks to the Prendiville Art Department. Caitlin and Hailey Wellsted, Blace Antonio, and Katelyn Liebl (Year 11) worked with talented street artist Trevor Bly to create their “space” themed artwork. Mr Longshaw and I also got our hands dirty on the day and, as you can see from the results, we're suitably proud of what the students and team have achieved.
Thank you to Mr Greenwood for coming to me with the initial concept and photographing the process, and the always-reliable Mr Longshaw for coordinating the project. Also, on behalf of the College, we would like to acknowledge and thank the City of Joondalup for funding the project. It could not have been achieved without your assistance.
We look forward to working with you again on the next community project.

YEAR 9 DRAMA NIGHT
As part of the Year 9 Drama Course, students are required to learn and perform a class play for the annual Year 9 Drama Night. On Thursday 4th November, 60 Year 9 Drama students strutted their stuff on stage in front of a full house audience. The evening was packed with entertainment and each of the plays performed (‘The Waiting Womb’, ‘Hoodie’ & ‘I’m in a Fairy Tale…Get Me Out of Here’) were very entertaining and individual in style.
Many of the students were exited but nervous about performing in front of a live audience, and the many months of rehearsals, line learning and costume fittings resulted in an entertaining and professional evening. There were some very hilarious moments throughout each of the 3 performances and the audience certainly enjoyed the many laughs!
The following students are to be recognised for their exceptional leadership on the night. Hayleigh French-Bluhm (Year 10) is to be congratulated for stepping in for a student who twisted her ankle. She did an amazing job at learning her lines with just 24 hours notice. Bailey Porro (who was helping backstage) also stepped out on stage for a student who became suddenly ill. He only had a 15-minute warning and still managed to get into costume, character and learn lines – Both Hayleigh and Bailey performed brilliantly!
A big thank you to Ben Collins (Theatre Technician) for his ongoing help and support with sound and lighting. Ingrid Parkin (Costume Coordinator) also did an outstanding job at designing, sewing and fitting individual student costumes – The kids looked fantastic on stage! Lastly, thank you to all of the student’s parents who supported their child throughout the process.
Miss Sorgiovanni and Ms Carey would like to congratulate all of the Year 9 Drama students for their energy, commitment and willingness to be apart of this fantastic evening. We hope that you enjoyed yourselves and learnt a lot from this experience.

TECHSPOT
Welcome to our TechSpot. This section of our newsletter is for students and staff to share tips, tricks, ideas and apps to do with technology at Prendiville.
This week, we have two essential apps for your iPad.
School often communicate with parents regarding which apps your child should be protected from, but that is not the case this week. We examine some essential, non-academic apps that should be a must for phones and tablets alike.
Emergency App
This app has the numbers required in an emergency, including CrimeStoppers. But what makes this app useful is that it has the GPS coordinates of where you are calling from. It gives the address, and the latitude and longitude (without using the Internet connection). So, your child will always be able to tell the emergency operator exactly where they are.
Find My iPhone
We go on about this one a lot, because it is so useful! I used it to locate my dropped phone in the park one evening; it is that accurate. Find My iPhone will allow your child to see if their iPad really has been left in their locker, or if it is at a friend’s house. It allows the device to be remotely erased, locked, a sound played (great for if the iPad is missing in a messy bedroom) or display a message to whoever has picked it up. It may save you a lot of money in the long run, and is a good argument for having a single family iTunes account.
If you need help with iPads or just want to ask a question, feel free to drop into the iPad Helpdesk in the Library at lunchtimes. We will be happy to give you assistance.
