WDMCS Statement in Response to Atlanta Shooting
This past week, a shooting in Atlanta killed eight people, six of them Asian women. West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) stands in support of and solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students, families, staff, and the broader AAPI community. You are valued members of our district, and it is an integral part of our mission to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for you.
The rise of hate crimes against the AAPI community is indicative of larger challenges faced in our society. As a district, we remain committed to our six-point plan for equity and inclusion. Through ongoing learning, community dialogue, and self-reflection on our responsibilities and role as a school district, we continue to combat and address these issues. It is imperative that we stand firm in our values and our fight for equity and justice.

Reminder: Stay Home if SickAs we return from spring break, please review the following reminders from WDMCS Health Services: COVID-19 vs. Allergy Symptoms Those with COVID-19 may not always develop a fever or lose their sense of taste or smell. COVID-19 often seems more like a cold or allergies, especially for children. Common symptoms are a runny nose, sore throat, muscle/body aches, a headache, and fatigue. Please continue to be vigilant and stay home from school when ill, even with mild potential symptoms. Many students do experience allergy symptoms this time of year, but it is important to stay home and keep all of our students and staff safe. Spring Break Travel Guidance WDMCS will not require students and staff to adhere to the CDC recommendation of self-quarantining for a full 7 days after travel, even with a negative COVID test. Review WDMCS’ spring break travel guidance > Staff and students will follow the guidelines we have used for the past several months. This means:
Call the school nurse if your child has an illness or a medical concern, is being tested for COVID-19, has a positive COVID-19 result, or is a close contact. You can also call the WDMCS COVID-19 Response Line at 515-633-5990. | Resources for New WDMCS WebsitesWe hope you’ve had a chance to check out our 15 new district websites, launched Monday, March 15. These include the district site, 13 school sites, and a new Community Education website. We reviewed feedback from staff, students, and parents when developing these sites, and we believe you'll find it easier to find the information you want. Each website is designed with a similar layout, allowing you to quickly navigate to important information. Here are some tips to get started. How do I access school sites? On a desktop or laptop, click on the “Our Schools” drop-down menu at the top of the page. On a mobile device, click the Menu button, then scroll down and click the Schools button. Click on the school name.
Where can I find quick links to parent or student resources? Each school site includes a Parent Resources and Student Resources drop-down menu. In addition, each school site home page has Quick Links for parents, students, and staff. These links are to the right of the large rotating photos on a desktop or laptop screen. They are located directly below the images on a mobile device.
What's the purpose of the "I Want to" menu? These links are common links to information that may be included on a school site, the Community Education site, and/or the main district site. These links are intended to serve as short-cuts to information parents and students often seek.
What if I bookmarked a page from the old site and now the link is broken? You can search for information using the Search function on the new websites. The link to search is located in the upper right corner on a desktop or laptop and the first option when you click Menu on a mobile device.
How do I get back to the main WDMCS site? Click "Our District" in the upper menu on a desktop or laptop. Select "District Home" under the menu button on a mobile device. | IASB School Improvement Needs AssessmentWDMCS has partnered with the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) to conduct a needs assessment survey. The survey is designed to help us assess our strengths and areas of needed improvement, with a focus on improved student achievement. We would like your feedback in response to the brief survey linked below. The survey takes an average of 9 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous. Thank you for your participation and helping to make improvements for our students!
