A Message from your Principal ~
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break and are ready for the new decade. You control your attitude and how you react to what life throws at you. Stay positive and optimistic. It is going to be a great new year!
We have begun planning for the 2020-2021 school year. We will have a Registration Night for parents and current 9th – 11th grade students will be on Monday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center. Incoming freshmen (current eighth graders) will meet in the auditorium at the same time for Transition Night. The counselors will have a short presentation and will be available for questions about courses for next year. The Career Academy teachers will also be here to talk about Career Pathways. This is a great chance to learn about courses offered and opportunities available to students.
Counselors will start the registration process January 21st with juniors, sophomores will be the week of January 28th, and then they will move on to freshmen on February 4th. Students should also look through the 2020-2021 HS Course Guide for descriptions of all courses. This can be found on the District’s Website https://www.siouxcityschools.org/ under Parents, and then Handbooks & Guides.
The window in Infinite Campus will be open for students to select their classes between January 21st and February 14th. Course Verification Sheets will be available for parents and students to sign during Parent/Teacher Conferences February 26th and 27th. It is important to remember this process determines the number of sections/courses we are able to offer.
Seniors, what are your plans after high school? A four-year college? A two-year degree? The military? Starting your career? By now you should have your choices narrowed down to one or two. Remember a two-year degree from a community college can be as powerful as a four-year degree. Be sure to finish strong because many scholarships, financial aid packages, and college acceptances are dependent on your final transcript.
With so many opportunities for our students, good planning will maximize their educational experience. Try different classes at the Career Academy; even if you find the course is not for you, high school is a perfect time to explore different options. Take advantage of the many dual credit and challenging AP courses high school has to offer!
Have a great 2020, and remember, every day is a GREAT day to be a Raider!
Richard O. Todd
East High School Principal

Lessons to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Annually, Sioux City Community Schools are in session on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in order to facilitate specialized instruction that honors the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Working in partnership with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the District plans age-appropriate lessons for every grade. Parents/guardians are welcome to visit our classrooms on January 20 as we learn more about the significant contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. You can contact your child’s teacher or call the main office at your child’s school to inquire about lesson times. All visitors are asked to check into the building office and receive a visitor pass before joining the classroom.
Maintaining A Safe and Healthy Environment
The Sioux City Community School District is committed to providing an environment where students and staff members are treated with dignity and respect. We recognize that we are not unique, in that we experience the challenges of school and community-based bullying, yet we want to be unique in serving as a District that works to make a significant and positive difference in this arena. Please, join us in the effort to maintain a safe and healthy school environment. Visit our website, www.siouxcityschools.org/anti-bullying-harassment-hazing/, to learn more about our anti-bullying policy, view resources to help us combat bullying, or report concerns. We also welcome your feedback. Consider sharing your ideas or concerns using the Let’s Talk tool on our website.
Let's Talk
An engaged community makes our District stronger. That is why we have made it easy for you to connect with us whenever it is convenient for you. We encourage you to take advantage of Let’s Talk!, our 24/7 online submission site. Reach out with your ideas, questions, concerns, and praise. Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
