Poway High Counseling

Spring 2018-19

Big picture

March to April: 2019-20 Course Request Audits

The Counselors are currently in the process of meeting with each of the 9th-11th grade students during class time in order to make sure their course requests are appropriate and reflect their future plans and get them on track. They are also going through each Senior's transcript to make sure they are on track to graduate. Because this process is complex, reaction time can be longer than usual at this time. Counselors are responding to emails and phone calls as quickly as they can, and students are able to come in to see them at Break, Lunch, and After School, but not during class time. Students who are not able to see their counselor should make a point of leaving their information in the log, so Counselors can call them in when they are available. They can also email their Counselor at any time with questions.

5.5 Classes

For students hoping to enrich their studies, or earn a couple extra credits toward graduating. We offer 5.5 classes outside the normal school day. The list of classes is available in the Counseling Office and the Front Office. All classes are Pass/Fail and are worth 2.5 credits each. Classes have started and the last day to enroll is today! Be sure to sign up ASAP!

Tutoring Options

Here at Poway, we are dedicated to helping our students do their best. For any students wishing to get a little boost with their studies, we have quite a few options.

**NEW!**
Math Tutoring - Wednesdays 2:45-4:00 pm in the Titan Center (Room K-16). An adult math tutor will be on campus to help with Integrated Math. This tutoring is free and all students are welcome to attend.

Paid Student Tutors - For a list of students who have been vetted by teachers to be able to tutor in various subjects, please contact johughes@powayusd.com. The students on this list decide where they are willing to tutor and how much they will charge.

Student Tutoring in the Library - As always, the Poway High School Library hosts free student tutoring for most subjects after school Monday through Thursday. The tutors are generally NHS students who tutor for community service credit. For students who take the buses, there are late buses they can use to get home afterward.

The Partnership for Drug Free Kids

The Partnership for Drug Free Kids provides support and guidance to families struggling with their child’s substance use. This is one of many great online resources to get information on everything from vaping to use of other substances. Below are links to some of the resources available on their site:

https://drugfree.org/parent-blog/the-teen-vaping-trend-what-parents-need-to-know/

https://drugfree.org/newsroom/news-item/partnership-for-drug-free-kids-extends-helpline-hours-to-reach-even-more-families-inneed-of-support/

With the recent Monitoring the Future Study release indicating that nearly one in three 12th graders reported using a vaping device in the past year, it’s imperative that parents are informed of the potential dangers that can result from vaping.

You can also contact Sharon Struck, CCPS, Student Services Specialist at Poway High, at sstruck@powayusd.com or 858-748- 0245 x5394, for a confidential conversation. We’re here to help.
