Chester Elementary School
April 17, 2019
Greetings Parents!
We hope you're enjoying your spring break and having an opportunity to spend additional time with your children! We are excited to see signs of spring, including getting more of our playground back from all of those snow hills! Pictured to the right is our 2nd/3rd grade pull up champion at 20, and beating all the boys! Congratulations! (FYI - for safety reasons, we typically don't put names and faces together when we are sharing information on social media.)
Read-a-thon is in full swing! Our wonderful PTA is hosting a read-a-thon and our students are looking for sponsors. All funds raised will support the many activities the PTA does for our students. Students are currently collecting sponsors to support them by the number of minutes they read, or a flat rate. Then, they will be keeping track of their reading from April 20-26. Following, they will be collecting money and turning it into their teachers with their reading log sheets. All funds collected supports the many events our PTA sponsors. You can access the CES PTA Read-a-thon documents below. (Thank you PTA!).
Kindness challenge continues. Students are encouraged to continue their anonymous/ninja acts of kindness, with a school goal of achieving 5,000 acts of kindness by the end of April. Our challenge of 5,000 acts for our small school equates to about 25 kindness acts per student. We hope you join us in encouraging our students to perform those acts of kindness at school and at home. Additionally, we are collecting gently used sneakers (please no sandals or boots) for children in Kenya. You can drop these shoes off in the can by the front of the office. Thank you!
April 22 Assembly from 11:15-12:00 for our 4th-6th graders. Parents are welcome to join us and observe the assembly. Students will be hearing from retired educator and author, Michelle Trujillo (also a seasonal resident at Lake Almanor!). Michelle's newest book entitled Start with the Heart is a gold mine for supporting students struggling with emotional challenges. I've worked with Michelle previously, and she delivers a powerful message about social emotional learning and supporting students' needs. Following the assembly, Michelle will be working with 4th-6th grade leaders to provide a presentation for 1st-3rd graders. After our early release at 1:35, Michelle will continue to work with our staff. We are excited to welcome Michelle Trujillo to CES!
Know an incoming kindergartener next year? If so, please pass on that our K round up is April 25, 2019 from 8:30-10:00 am at CES. We will be providing free health exams, and requesting birth certificates and shot records. Please register your K child online by visiting www.pcoe.k12.ca.us, click on "enrollment" on the right side of the screen, select "2019-2020 school year," create an account and complete the registration. We can also assist with online registration on April 25. Please call CES if questions. Thanks!
Student restrooms are back! We apologize for any inconveniences you may have heard about last Thursday and Friday. We were dealing with some blockages in the sewer system and had to ask students to use alternative restrooms near the office. Thankfully, we found the culprit in the pipes - pencils, underwear and feminine napkins. We will be delicately discussing what we can and cannot flush with students when they return, and appreciate any support at home.
We appreciate your willingness to review our communication, stay informed and be an active part of your child's education. Thank you!
